We really messed-up recently by prepaying for a month in an RV Park while negotiating on the occupancy of a new home. As good/bad luck would have it the home became available almost immediately and we'd only stayed 7 nights in the RV Park. We tried to work-out some sort of compromise ....we were willing to pay a reasonable cancellation penalty ......but we felt the CG keeping 24 paid nights was a bit much! The best we could get was a non-transferable "coupon" for the 24 nights...which is basically useless since we now have a home here!

LIve & learn.....we'll try to never pre-pay again ..... or at least negotiate a reasonable exit strategy should something unexpected occur. On the bright side, I prefer the view from the new place to the RV Park so it's all good.

I don't see the 'unfriendly' part. You made a reservation, their policy said $10 cancelation fee, THEY OFFERED YOU $50 RAIN CHECK for a year. What's unfriendly about that? For $10 you are trying to paint them as the bad guys? The 'incident that I(you) incurred ' doesn't sound bad to me. Ever try to cancel or change an airline reservation? A good hotel? a vacation? Then you say, "This is not the first incident I have heard or witnessed at this campground." But you returned for 5 years???

Sorry, I won't put Candy Hill on my list of Must Not Stay There Places. They sound pretty reasonable to me, and a full campground plus a waiting list of others seem to agree.

One our favourite CG charges a $25 Cancellation fee. I don't have a problem with paying it if I cancel.

I've always had to pay 1 nights charge to cancel. The $10 seems quite acceptable.

There it is in black and white!, or should I say blue and red!
Lets face it, a campground is in business to make money! They are paying employees to be there to answer the phone, take reservations etc. I would think that canceling after that length f time and being charged 10.00 is very reasonable. I have heard a lot more horror stories than that. If you get choked up that much on a ten dollar bill to call out a campground, maybe you should try the motel 6!

I get irked when I am on the road and suddenly just don't want to drive anymore so DW gets the GPS changed to 'nearby campgrounds' and starts phoning to see if there is room. Sure enough the second one she called said they had an opening so she said we'd be there in a couple of minutes. The woman told her that they didn't hold spots without a reservation and was in the process of telling DW that as we drove up to the office. She told DW that we were now out of luck because another unit was about to get the opening she was going to give us.

Hard not to, but you laugh when you're filling out the paperwork knowing this woman has no idea of what we were laughing hilariously at. Weeiirrrd

I guess the lesson learned is to always read the terms of service. Every campground we have stayed in has had their policies posted and on their website. There is a cost to doing business.

I think the OP is way off base here. A $10 cancellation charge is perfectly reasonable and almost every campground does this. Plus...they offered you a $50 rain check and some how they are the bad guys! Wow.

Sorry...I have to side with the campground on this one.

I too think $10 is reasonable. Sounds like you weren't too happy with them in the past, either, so perhaps you should find a different CG in the future.

And again

When you get to a campground and ask the question
How busy and they are fully booked
Yet the number of no shows is sometimes unbelievable.
Travelers can't get into busy campgrounds yet sights are left empty because of no shows.
Even if a campground doesn't bother with a credit card, ill always call to cancel if I need just out of courtesy.

I don't worry about it. For $10 I'll just drink water at my next restaurant stop instead of flavored water (ice tea) that will cost about $10.

Reasonable expectation from CG's.
