Upper Michigan

We are looking for neat campgrounds in the upper peninsula of Michigan. Suggestions?

Tahquamenon Falls State Park and you can truly say you've been to Paradise. Don't miss Whitefish Point while you're there. Woodland Park campground on Lake Superior in Grand Marais. Off the grid, Anderson Lake West Forest campground near Gwinn. Don't miss Laughing WhiteFish Falls south east of Marquette. Many other campgrounds too numerous to list and many beautiful places to see. The UP is one of my favorite places in the states to visit...

Ditto on the falls..The state park is size limited.. A big rig will not fit but there are private CG's nearby... Along the Lake Superior shore is the city of Grand Maris..They have a city park that is NOT (Far as I know) size limited only complaint is nick-o-locks on the showers.

Can not help you otherwise. as those are the only two CG's I've been in in the UP.. I have covered a whole lot of the UP.. Just not camping.

Also on Passport America. Won't win points for beauty - but priced right and we really enjoyed our stay.

Grand Marais is on the north, Minnesota, side of lake Superior, not the southern, Michigan UP, side

Aune Osborn campground right at the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie Michigan Right on the river where you can watch the 1000 freighters coming & going from the Locks. Locks are maybe less than a mile.

Soo Locks Campground. Sault Sainte Marie. You can watch the ships go by and

go to www.AIS.boatneards.com so you can check information on the boats. We were just there last weekend. It is close enough to walk (about one mile) to the Locks.

Another nice campground is on the western side of the UP. Negaunee City Campground

The Munising town cg is a good place, right on the lake and close to pictured rocks.

Another vote for Aune Osborn and the Munising Tourist park (north and west of Munising).

If you're near Copper Harbor, you'll want to tour the copper mine, and if nothing else, you'll want to run Brockaway Mountain Drive that runs between Copper Harbor and Eagle Harbor. One of the most scenic places in Mi. (or anywhere for that matter). Not a good plan in a MH or pulling a tt though. Road is narrow and winding in many areas, with a lot of elevation changes. An option while up there might be a stop in the town of Gay, and have your picture taken in front of the Gay bar.

The UP covers a lot of country, no clue where your headed or coming from, but you might look into Lake of the Clouds/Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park/Silver City. Pretty remote area. So remote nobody figured out how to get timber cut in that area to market back in the day - so much of it has never been cut.

There are also waterfall tours through the whole UP. That might provide you with some direction if you don't already have one. Same with light houses.

Last, as far as timing of the trip? Flies can ruin a camping experience up there. For that reason we generally time our trips up there early and late season. Fall color tours spectacular.

Perhaps he's traveled there or perhaps he lived there.
