Upscale RF Park outside Manhattan?
Looking for a really nice place to stay and make day trips into the City.
Looks like BlackBear is an option. I've been using GoodSam's search engines though...
Any others that I haven't found?
I'll have a Class A DP (renting).
many thanks

My wife is a native Manhattenite, originally from the Village....... I've been going to the city now for over 25 years. To experieice NYC, you need to stay in the city. Drop the RV at one of the campgrounds and ante up for a place to stay in town for a few nights.........
Forget the tourist open top bus ride around town, and pick a handful of places to spend and spend quality time to really enjoy them.
A few thoughts for you:
MOMA (Museum of Modern Art; my favorite)
Guggenheim Museum; this incredible Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece is an integral part of the art
Metropolitan Museum of Art (more traditional works)
Whitney (brand new building, more contemporary works)
Met Bruer (old building that previously housed the Whitney, and now part of the Metropolitian Museum of Art fosused on contemporary art)
Spend an evening at the Village Vanguard and / or the Blue Note for great Jazz.
There is also Jazz at Lincoln Center if you can catch that by chance....... (Still on my to do list)
Of course see a show on Broadway, but be cognizant that tickets for the biggest shows may be hard to come by.
Soho, the Village, and Meat Packing District are becoming / have become very tourist oriented, but still fun to walk around, and many many great places to eat. But take your time.
Of the "regular" sites to see, Times Square (has been so homogenized), Empire State Building (I've never been in it), Wall Street etc., are more of something you catch in "passing" on your way to something else......
Just some things to consider......
Yes, it will be expensive............
Regards

Liberty Harbor-stayed there late last year-what a rip off. Promised me a refund and never saw it, washrooms filthy, new construction going on at the back of the lot and work starts at 7 am.
Wouldn't stay there again for anything.
Best thing about that dump was leaving.

Agree about not staying at Liberty Harbor. If you don't mind going onto Long Island there is a county park in Old Beth Page that is very nice. It only has water and 50 amp (plus dump stations you move for).

All true about Liberty Harbor. It is a parking lot with water and electric. Like going to a Walmart for the night only not as nice.
HOWEVER.
5 blocks from the subway
1 block from the river ferry
Restaurant on the premises
And on the right day you can see fireworks over the Statue of Liberty from the parking lot.
We have stayed there 3 times to visit the city. You can be in the city in 30 minutes and that includes walking to the subway. Can't walk take a cab to the subway.
Don't see why people complain about a place that is exactly what it says it is.

Makes perfect sense to me. Nobody said it was a resort. But if you want quick access to NYC, there is nothing better. I plan to go there with open eyes and enjoy the convenience.

Black Bear was the first campground that we stayed at when we got our Motor Home.
We went Memorial Day Weekend 2 years ago and enjoyed it very much. Our campsite was in the top section. The whole camp ground is very quiet and very clean. I know you will enjoy your visit there. I am just concerned that it is not really that close to Manhattan to go in and out daily. You must also remember the traffic! If you want a quiet relaxing experience choose Black Bear. If you are going into the city several times choose Liberty...you would only be sleeping there anyway.

Near Manhattan
DON"T go near NYC in a motorhome especially if you are just renting!! Traffic is horrendous the streets are not large vehicle friendly. Also the nearby towns in Jersey are the same ie: Bergen, Hudson & Essex County. Find a nice campground in lower NY State or northwestern NJ and take public transportation into the city or rent a car also plan to spend a lot to park a car all day in NYC.

Knowing a little about that area but not being familiar with Florida, NY, I looked it up on Google Maps and did a route from Florida, NY to Times Square NYC.
First off Black Bear Camp Ground is in beautiful country - not quite in the Catskills Mountains.
The route says it is and hour and 19 minutes. Not sure how much that takes into account traffic? It has been awhile since I have driven in and around NYC (where I learned to drive!) but I did do a "Drive-Around" my old Brooklyn neighborhood a couple years ago and one thing that was constant - we always stopped. Never know why - but we stopped and stood still on the NYC hi-ways - and this was during a weekday not rush hour.
So - I guess it is something to think about - 3 to 4 hour round trip each day and a beautiful country like setting at night or as some have suggested, Liberty RV Park and about an hour RT into NYC on public transit - which brings up another good point - parking in NYC. Not sure how much that would add to you travel budget but I would guess $40 to $60 per day. Although the camp ground has tours of NYC.....not the same as being on your own in The Big Apple......
One other thing - if you stay at Liberty - you would not have to tow a vehicle...
Just my thoughts............wherever you stay - have a blast - NYC is definitely one of a kind - as most BIG cities are.

Nobody who is sane drives a car into NYC for a leisure trip. The traffic is horrendous and it will cost you $50-$75 just to park it. You will not be able to use it to go from one place to another without ponying up the parking fee again. The smart way to visit NYC is arrive by train, ferry or public transit and take taxis, Uber or the subway to get around town. Or sign up for a bus tour. Some of them run continuously and you can on and off as often as you wish.

So that's my problem!! My wife Angie always says "Your crazy!!!" Huh - I never made the connection!!
But.........I have to agree with you - if you ain't use to it - don't drive in NYC. As I said in my earlier post - lots of stop and go - the type of stops on the hiways where you go from 70mph to dead stop in a matter of seconds. "Standing on the brakes" comes to mind. The streets are narrow and have parked cars on either side....and let's not forget delivery trucks that stop literally "anywhere" to deliver their goods. Then there are the "City Busses" - Fahgedaboudit...!!!!!!!
I must say tho.........when I was driving through Manhattan - Queens - The Bronx and Brooklyn a couple years ago..........it was like riding a bike - it all comes back to you...........LOL So yes MRUSA, (start the music), " Still crazy after all these years!"
Thanks y'all - I couldn't help myself.....

I just got back from a long weekend trip in NYC. I can not even imagine driving anywhere near NYC in a motorhome...that I rented! I would think that would be crazy for someone who is FROM NYC, let alone a tourist!
We actually took an Amtrak train from the Philly area right into Penn Station (cheap, easy and fairly nice!). We stayed in midtown at a Courtyard. Interestingly, we had about 3 different hotels reserved before we finally cancelled and settled for Courtyard. Our rates all hotels were around $300/night when we first started looking. We wanted something nice...but not over the top.
Anyway..about 5 days before we were to stay, my sister called and found out the rates dropped so we were given the new rate of $167/night! A similar thing happened in DC last year and we saved a TON of $$ at the last minute. I guess if the hotel isn't booked, they will drop their rates at the last minute to try to fill.
So it may not be too $$ to just stay in NYC and it is SO much easier and more fun to be right there and not have to travel in and out.

We stayed at Croughton Pt. a couple of times. Really nice campground, easy to get too, and right next to the train station.
