It's a US federal highway. Two lanes with a berm and cleared on either side to spot wildlife from jumping out in front of you. Some parts are wide open and treeless, so on a windy day you might fight the wheel. After merging with US 191, you enter into the pine forests and terrain of the mountains, but the road is still the same as described above. Passing lanes on hills, not a bad drive at all.
