Valley of Fires camping availability - January '16

I would like to spend 5-7 days at Valley of Fires State Park in Nevada in January this coming year. All the sites are non-reservable. Does anyone have experience with grabbing a campsite here in January? If it is hard, any suggestions on other sites nearby? Vegas is not an option; we prefer country to cities.

It will be cold in January so your chances are good, especially if you pull in on Monday morning after any weekenders leave.
