Viral infection warning at Edisto Island Live Oaks Camground

Hello all - I want to warn anyone that is looking to go to Edisto Island Live Oaks Campground that there is a viral infection currently spreading at this Campground. I had a family of 17 there from April 18 to 23 and 12 of them came down with nausea and diarrhea, some for a couple of days and some are still suffering from it. After speaking with other campers there who were also affected by it, they told me it had been going on for at least two weeks. I have called Edisto Campground and complained and I have also called the SC Department of Parks and Recreation because we were never notified nor were there any flyers handed out or posted at the restrooms warning of any problems. Hopefully they can find the cause whether the water or just dirty bathrooms which need steralizing, but please beware if you do go there that this is happening.

It sounds like Noro virus which spreads like wildfire. Think of the incidents on cruise ships. One person comes aboard with the virus and touches a door handle and it spreads quickly. That is probably what happened in the campground. Vigorous and frequent hand washing can be a big help.

As noted it is most likely a Noro virus. We always keep small size hand sanitizers with us. Luckily the DW has a large pocketbook. Try one of these and wash often.

Reefwalker, your efforts are commendable, but communicating with two groups who have a strong interest in keeping problems quiet as the tourist season starts is probably not the most effective way to go.

Better to contact the South Carolina Dept of Health and Environmental Control. www.scdhec.gov
