There really isn't a safe spot for an RV to park in Chicago. Not knowing the area and you could be in for quite a suprise (vandalism, theft, etc) from some of the locals. About the only place I could think of to get you close to downtown is by Navy Pier but I'm not sure if they let RV's in the parking area.

There are no campgrounds or RV parks in close proximity to the city, at least that I know of. The closest parks are north, west and south of the city.
I think your best bet would be to pick a park and then day-trip to the city using Metra, the commuter rail. There are parks southwest of Aurora or Naperville for example, which are both Metra stops. Its about a 1 hour train ride to the city from there, probably two hours by car. You don't want to drive an RV into the Loop, there are virtually no places to park and what there is is extremely expensive.
Check this site for RV and campground reviews:

Hope this helps.

On our recent trip around the U.S. we wanted to go visit Chicago. I researched for a long time and never came up with a decent answer for a place to stay any where near Chicago.
So we put Chicago on our fly to places to visit.

Here is one source for locating an RV park near Chicago, RV Park Reviews :: Illinois We have stayed at Leisure Lake CG, and I think it is a good place to park while visiting the area. Martin Camper Park and Empress Casino are OK too, depending on what parts of Chicago you wish to see. For directions to Leisure Lake it is best to phone them for updated directions because of road construction.

"price is $38 for a 24 hour period" If parking in the city is important, the marshalling field would be a viable choice, even if I would be parked with as many as "500 large vehicles". Thanks for the links Gene.
