Want to go south December 19 - 25. Suggestions?

We are first time RV owners.

We would like to take it out for a week or so from December 19 - 25. We live in Western Kentucky and would like to go south (Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia or upper to mid-Florida.

We know that many places are filled up way in advance and, to be quite honest, we don't know much about RV parks, places to see, etc.

Anyone have suggestions?

Congratulations as a first time RV'r.

Before the collective "we" can offer suggestions, it would be helpful if you let us know what you are looking for in a get-away. Do your plans include driving point A to B, 2-3 days of R&R, then driving from point B to A. Or, are looking for a circular route driving a bit each day?

There is plenty of historic sites in the area. Are you into these? Quilts? Golf? Antiquing? Fishing?

Give us a few clues and we might be able to help you out. You came to the perfect place for suggestions. We just need a few clues.

That said, I would suggest something a day's drive away from where you live. Maybe 300 miles or so. If you are prepared for your first trip, great. If unexpected things happen (and this is common...just learn to roll with the flow), you are only a day away from home.

I will offer a second suggestion...if you are up to it. This year we stayed at a wonderful state park just outside of Savannah, GA. The park is called Skidaway Island State Park. They took a bit of a hit for Mathew, but are expected to reopen mid-November.

It is a two day drive from Western KY. The average temps for Dec are Mid 60's day, low 40's night. I would recommend that you do reserve a site, and preferably one of the sites with full hookups.

This would leave you with 3-4 days to explore the area before heading back to Western KY. We stayed there for 10 days in April...and didn't see all that we wanted to see. In fact we drove from there to KY for a family reunion.

Enjoy the journey.

Many snowbirders don't leave their home until after Christmas so your time-frame is an advantage.

Gulf Shores State Park, Alabama is an awesome place to stay - beautiful beach, active small town, good restaurants, fresh shrimp off the boat, etc. The park has full hookups. There are many other park in the nearby surrounding area.

There is a new park next to Gulf State Park called Pandion Ridge which is very nice. It's so new that I'm sure it will not be full this season. Another nice park is Sugar Sands which is just north of the Intercoastal Waterway from PR. From West Ky, Tupelo Ms would be about half way and there is several COE, State, and private parks in the area if you want to split the trip each way.

You didn't mention Louisiana, but we spent some time at the very nice Cajun Palms just east of Lafayette last January and pretty much had the place to ourselves. Found plenty of things to see and do and the weather was pretty good. More info here - Big Dude's Eclectic Ramblings: 2016 Louisiana Trip - Let’s Head South – Days 1&2
