West Coast to East Coast

Planning a trip cross country from California to Maine for the fall colors.

Has anyone made a similar journey? Looking for about how it will take and best routes for sightseeing / destinations along the way.

Thanks in advance.

We tried a similar trip leaving Oregon in September headed East. We only made it as far as South Dakota and the weather got so cold and nasty we turned South. Ended up in Florida, the fall colors were not what we had hoped for. However we were warm and dry!!

Three years ago, left the west coast Aug. 10th. Labor day weekend in Eastern Ontario, through the Canadian Maritime Provinces ; dodging hurricanes, 40,000 homes without power the day we entered Nova Scotia ; Crossed into Maine , Sept 17th. turned out the change was late that year didn't really have time to wait , and there was another hurricane coming , so we missed the best part.
Best advice for the trip would be , mark off the areas on the route you have seen before , or are likely to get to on a shorter trip later, and get through them quickly. Get straight to the areas you really want to see on this trip, and don't try and stick to a tight schedule once your there .
Vermont , with the covered bridges was a favorite , unfortunately many were destroyed by flooding the next year.
Safe travels.
