West Glacier to West Yellowstone

Hi my wife and I will be traveling from West Glacier to West Yellowstone in mid to late September, we need some sugestions on the route to take and places to stay along the way. We have no time table this is our first big retirement trip with our new trailer and we have never been out west so any help is greatly appriciated, we figure on driving only 4 to 5 hours a day and no rush to leave if we find a nice area to explore.

If you get on Google Maps and plug in W. Glacier and W. Yellowstone it will give you three routes all within 15 mi. of each other. Just depends on the route you choose. You'll have approx. 400 miles.

All start from Columbia Falls, MT:

1. 35/83 to 200E to 141 to Avon, MT. Then 12 to I-90 to Cardwell, MT. 359/287 to 20 to W. Yellowstone

2. 35/83 to 200E to 141 to Avon, Mt. Then 12E to Helena. Then 287 to I-90E to Belgrade. Then 85/191 to W. Yellowstone.

3. 35 south to Polson. Then 93S to I-90 to Cardwell. Then 359 to 287S. to 20 to W. Yellowstone.

The route seems covered, but mid to late Sept you will find overnight temps can go into the mid to upper 20's. And you know what that means. I would want to be leaving the high north that time of year.

Been to Glacier and Yellowstone 3 times from the east coast. Mountain driving with potential for ice/snow - no thank you.
Stay safe.

West Glacier to West Yellowstone

I did this run in the reverse order last month from Grizzly in West Yellowstone to West Glacier KOA and it was an 8 hour drive for me. My Garmin would have you taking 93 south to I90. At Bozeman, you would pick up 191 going south.

I disagree about bad weather/snow in September. We've been in that whole area a few times n Sept. and found it's the best time to go. We never had it down to the 20's and no snow.

We went US-93, I-90 E, Mt-2 at Caldwell, and US-287 into W.Yellowstone which worked well but don't know about current road conditions.
