West Glacier / Whitefish campgrounds in summer

Hopefully several of you can chip in on this question: we are hoping to see Glacier this summer (first two weeks of August), for now planning on camping in the Whitefish or west glacier area. Question is: do the campgrounds there fill up during that time?? (i.e. do we need to be making reservations NOW...if it is not already too late???). This is a "domestic tranquility" issue...so you advise would be MOST appreciated

I would make my reservations now. Early August is busy in the area. We stayed in Columbia Falls at the Columbia Falls RV Park. Columbia Falls RV Park

North American RV Park is a good choice Glacier National Park Montana RV Park Campground, Camping Cabins and Yurt Village near West Glacier, Montana - RV Sites, Cabins, Yurts, Free WiFi, 50AMP, Glacier Park Montana, Lodging, Camping, Hiking, Rafting, Horseback Riding, GNP, Red Bus Tours, B

Make the reservation. The campgrounds can be full until Labor Day. (Then it snows 3 weeks later ;-)

We used Mountain View RV (a PA CG) a little west of Columbia Falls last summer(mid May) for 8 days and for 10 days the summer before last(July). It's a nice, reasonable park($20-$24@night) and is a little closer to GNP. We found prices were higher in Whitefish, I guess because of the ski resort attitude, but mainly we found CF to be more centrally located. The drive around Dead Horse Reservoir is nice...lots of dirt roads to explore. Saw some waterfalls and an occasional moose.

Of course, you probably already know not to miss 'Going to the Sun' road inside GNP...one of the most spectacular roads we've ever driven. We drove into St. Mary for ice cream and on into Many Glacier where we saw our first ever grizzly. Lots to do and see in the whole area. Could spend two weeks there...easily. Bob

BTW, this past summer the road to the sun was not open yet(May), so a later trip (in July) will (almost) assure a drive on that road. Never mind, I see the Aug. date now.

Definitely make your reservations NOW! Don't worry about overnights along the way. There are many options but if that is your destination you do not want to be denied upon your arrival.

I would for sure make the reservations now. That area will fill up fast at that time of the year. Have a great time, it's a beautiful place to visit.
