Western NC Camping Spots?

Hey All! We just relocated the Huntersvill, NC from Indiana. In Indiana the State Parks were phenomenal and everywhere.

Here we've not found the same experience so we're looking for some help with camping locations. Also if there are any camping groups in this area that would let us meet other folks. We have a Class C, and enjoy fishing, hiking a biking whenever we're out. We also have two miniature dachshunds that go with us.

Does anyone have recommendations for campgrounds here? We'd prefer to have at least power and water hookups, but water isn't critical. Bit seems most of the SP's we've checked out are more boon docking types of places.

So, any suggestions for us? We're also always looking to meet others so anyone involved in groups?

Thanks for any help. We absolutely love it here and can't wait to get out.

D&D

Wilkesboro, NC

Check out Bandits Roost Campground in Wilkesboro. It's probably less than 2 hours from you, halfway up the mountains toward Boone. Sites have water and electricity but there is no sewer connection. There are 2 dump stations. Sites are large and very scenic - some right on the lake. Link to: Facility Details - BANDITS ROOST, NC - Recreation.gov

We have enjoyed staying at Trails End Campground, north of Waynesville, about $45 not including discount or Passport America. Nice view, FH, and good base to visit GSM, Maggie Valley, and Cherokee. Was in Franklin last month, great place with lots of hiking, and numerous waterfalls. Stayed at The Great Outdoor RV Resort which was very nice for around $45, but has discounts for Passport America and Good Sams. Lastly, but not least was a wonderful campground near Lake Toxaway, River Bend RV Resort, highly recommended, FH, beautiful area, lot of hiking, waterfalls in the area, also about $45, but has PA discount.

x2 The great Outdoor RV resort near Franklin and take a look at Creekwood Farm RV Park & Pride RV Resort, located next to each other on US-276 north of Waynesville.

Standing Indian Mountain Campgrounds seems nice. The only complaint I see is that there is a lot of generator noise.

If nothing else, you can go there just to climb Standing Indian Mountain. Not a real hard climb but a fantastic view.

As you've already found, NC state parks in southwestern NC are pretty poor. All the money (for some reason :( ) seems to be spent around Raleigh and eastern part of the state. Jordan Lake near Raleigh had a couple of nice CGs. There's an OK county park near Waxhaw: Cane Creek Park. You're in luck though...SC has a great park system. Wateree SP south of Lancaster SC...Andrew Jackson SP north of Lancaster, and Cheraw SP are all relatively close to you. Cheraw even has a golf course. Hope this helps!

If you find yourself in Asheville, Mama Gerties was fantastic.

This is on their upper camp site area, a very beautiful view!

Likely too cold now, but in Spring, Summer and early Fall, try the Meadows of Dan Campground in Meadows of Dan, Va. Right on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Large sites and FHU. Good views, open and shady sites. Staff is great and 6 days gets you a free one. Home Page

have had several mini-rallies there over the years. The road from Hillsvill over to M of D had been re built and is much better than it was a. few years back. Straighter, wider and just better to travel on with a trailer or MH.
