We just stayed at Knights Key. They have extended their closing date until some time this coming December. Yes it is sold, and unless something drastic happens, like the developer being indicted for all the bribes he (may or may not) have made to get the permits approved, then it is going away. Did I mention he picked up the tab on all the new energy efficient windows in City Hall?!?

Anyway, everyone's rates in Marathon and surrounding are creeping upward this winter in preparation for Knight's Key closing. Sunshine raised their rates, Knight's Key went up from last winter . . . .

We're now heading back up North into the snow as we have to get back to work

When we first started camping/traveling (40+ years) we never made reservations at the Florida state Parks and were never turned away, they always had a site for us. I haven't stayed at a Florida State Park in years just because ya can't get a site. Just to satisfy my curiosity I tried again. I guess it was Feb 7th and I wanted Jan 1 2017 for 2 weeks, well the entire park was reserved/booked, give me a break. I think the only way to find a site would be with a tent. I mentioned it once before that with all the land Florida State Parks have you would think they could expand the campsites. With that some fool suggested that I meant the entire State park should be a campsite, seriously??? Get a life!!!

With all of the intense environmental rules down here, expansion is nearly impossible.

I read an article about building a condo. They want the builder to give back to the gov., a buildable lot for each unit.

There is no laundromat within 50 miles of the City of Marathon.

The old one shut down due to sewer costs and the brand new one sits closed for unknown reasons.

We have never failed to find an available site in any state park campground when we drive in.

I wouldn't count on getting a walk in site in the FL. Keys.

It's a long dead end drive and the Florida State Park Website says,

All campsites or cabins not reserved or occupied may be rented to walk-in visitors on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations are made on a pay-in-advance basis and same-day reservations are not available.

That leads me to believe they do not set any aside.

I checked Curry Hammock S.P. All of the sites are fully booked thru May.

They do set aside sites for walk ins. If you go back and look at RA, I believe you'll find there are a few sites not listed as being available to reserve. Those few sites are set aside for walk ins, although the chances of getting one as a walk in are slim.
I just checked Curry Hammock for April 1 and there were at least 3 sites not listed on the list of sites.

I called Curry Hammock State Park. The office reluctantly told me that they have one site for walk in's.

So I was wrong and stand corrected.

She said that the chance of getting that site was very slim. She then wished me luck.

I would guess that the other sites, not listed, are host sites.

I'm surprised they only have one site for walk ins. I'm more familiar with John Pennekamp (I've been there 93 times ) If you check the campground map for Pennkamp the sites for the campground hosts (23 and 47) aren't shown on the map. Sites 1, 3 and 16 aren't shown either and I believe they're set aside for walk ins.
I don't know if other parks operate the same but Pennekamp has an area off the main campground, which has a few (4,5 or6 ?) spots for more campground "volunteer/hosts". Those spots are just about always filled.

I did more reseasch on the subject. Found that you need to be ready at 8:00 am on RA to reserve the spot. Found one that was reserveable, fired up and atomic clock app, at 8:00 and 1 second pressed book spot....came back...reserved! WOW Someone has to have software or something like that ebay bidding stuff or the RA clock is not based on atomic clock...might be a bit faster? Also...maybe the folks that know the trick are not talking?...it would be just more competition for the limited numbers of spot!

Main problem is limited facilities and 325,000,000 people wanting to use them.

Last year we tried to get into WP Franklin COE Park. The first time I tried to call in at 8 AM and didn't get a site. The next day, we booted up 2 computers and chose 2 available sites. We had everything ready and only needed to hit "Book Site". Right at 8 AM we hit the "book site" button. We missed out on one site but luckily, got the other one. Maybe this will help. Good luck.

Not sure about that 8:00 am idea, unless you're referring to making a reservation on the edge of the reservation window. A few minutes ago I got a reservation for 5 days in April at John Pennekamp. It wasn't available this am. Someone cancelled sometime during the day.

We tried the 2 computers at 8 AM trick this morning. There were only 2 sites available at Jonathan Dickinson State Park. We booted up both computers and we had everything ready to go at 8 AM. DH hit the book button exactly as our computer turned to 8 AM. I waited 2 seconds in case the timing was off a bit. DH got the site and I missed out. 2 seconds late was all it took. We only wanted 1 site so we were fine but it goes to show how quickly the sites book. Well see how it works next week when we try to book at John Pennekamp. I think that one may be a lot harder.
