If you have a day or more to sightsee, Davis Mountains State Park/Fort Davis/McDonald Observatory. Take TX17 south from Pecos through Balmorhea to Fort Davis or TX118 south from Kent west of the I-20/I-10 junction. There are some pretty good grades and mountain curves on the TX118 route.

Davis Mountains State Park.

You might look at the WASP museum in Sweetwater. It's all about the WWII women pilots who ferried planes and freed up a lot of guys to fly combat. It's between Abilene and Big Spring.
Good luck, good health and safe travels!

Enjoy the trip! We are heading West from Midland on Monday.
I lived in the old Brandon Hotel in Pecos for about 6 months back in 1969 while working on a Seismic Crew. Stopped in to see the town a few years ago on our way to Carslbad Caverns. Pecos used to be a bustling little town back in the day and now it's a crumbled mess that has moved out beside the new Walmart.
Lots of these towns have seen the same fate, sad to see.

That's the lyric. The title is "Texas in My Rearview Mirror."

Drop down to US 90 stop at Sonora Caverns - includes camping, Alpine TX home of UT Sul Ross. Marfa, see the lights (you could look up Marfa Lights) visit the art galleries in Marfa and the hotel where Giant was filmed. Side trip to Ft Davis and the Davis Mountain State Park. From there west you are on the surface of the moon.

I 20 west of Abilene is also the surface of the moon without the beauty. I 10 isn't much better. We just drove across on US 90 for the 10th time, much more interesting than the interstates and no slower.

The only sight I enjoy out that way is the 80mph speed limit signs.
