When do the bikers start arriving for Sturgis?

We will be at the Custer/Mt Rushmore KOA July 20 to 28. The Sturgis rally starts on August 6 this year, I believe. Does ayone know typically how early the bikers start arriving in the area? I have absolutely no problem with bikers, just trying to gauge how busy the roads might be.

Some will start coming in 7 days early. It will increase as the weekend approaches and that weekend the worse. The working stiffs will still be coming in Monday and Tuesday if their trip takes a few days.

We probably won't make it this year as I doubt we'll sober up by then. Maybe we should get 2 trikes so we don't have to worry about falling over when we stop. It just dawned on me, that's why they make trikes.

We have been working at the Rapid City KOA for the past 4 years through 4 Sturgis Rallies. Other then the increased motorcycle traffic, all riders behave themselves. We have had the Hells Angels and Outlaws in the campground at the same time with absolutely no problems.

Most of the riders spend all day riding or walking through Sturgis in the heat and by evening time they are pretty well tuckered out and will probably be in bed by 10PM.

The week before Sturgis, Custer, SD will have Custer Crusin going on so traffic in or around Custer/ Crazy Horse/ Hot Springs will be heavier.

With the increased Law Enforcement in place in all the various cities, most riders save their "drinking" for their campgrounds and other places. Not to many riders want to donate their $30-50K bikes to the state of South Dakota not to mention the court and attorney fees and the phone call home asking the significant other for bail money.

We are currently in Mitchell, just left Rapid City yesterday. We've seen lots of bikes/trikes on the road and on trailers. The rally doesn't start until Aug 6. We had to renew our driver's lic's and wanted to avoid the congestion, also. Don't know if they are all in the area for the rally but there are sure a lot on I 90.
