Where to stop Vicksburg or Natchez MS??

We are beginning a two month southeast US tour, leaving from Hot Springs AR on or about February 2, 2014. Our first stop is scheduled to be either Vicksburg or Natchez MS then on to New Orleans. Any recommendations on the "best" of the two, Vicksburg or Natchez?

Thanks for your ideas ... safe travels !!

Ron

One of the casinos in Vicksburg has a nice rv park, can't remember which one. It is not near the casino but away from the road and town noise. Of course they have a shuttle if you want it. The only thing that is different is that the entrance/exit is a steep, paved, drive. It looks daunting but is really not a problem.

We have stayed at both and like them both. Vicksburg has the historical battlefield but Natchez has more historic sites to visit. Depends on what you are looking for. Very nice state park in Natchez which is close to the city. If we could only visit one we would choose Natchez.

The Casino RV park is nice and the restaurant in the casino has a nice buffet. I won enough money on the slots, to pay for our stay, at the park and our dinner!

We also stayed in the park (don't remember the name), in Vidalia, Louisiana, which is on the Mississippi River and just over the river, from Natchez. Enjoyed our stay in both. Have fun!

Why not stay at both. Vicksburg has a very nice civil war battle field that I would highly recommend.
Natchez is an old town with a lot to see. I prefer the campground across the river from Natchez, River View, in Vidalia La. You can watch the boats pass on the river from inside your rv.

We recently stayed a couple of days at the Ameristar RV Park in Vicksburg. This was one of my favorite places on this vacation. Nice parking spot by a tree, plenty of dog-walk area, and the people in the office are super nice. I'm looking forward to our next trip through the area. You can't beat this park for easy access on-off I20, and the price is very reasonable ($22.50 per night with whatever discounts I got).

We stayed at Riverview in Vidalia several times. Get a site on south end on river and watch the barges go by.

We have stayed at the Ameristar Casino RV park twice and it is a nice park. The street going down (and coming up) is pretty steep, but manageable. The Civil War battlefield park is very nice. JMO...

We used to stay at Ameristar Casino RV park several times a year. No more. Recently they have wanted to park us in the middle rows which are very steep and hard to get level, and on two occasions double billed my credit card. Then it took several phone calls and a week give us a refund. We now stay in Clinton, just west of Jackson.

If history is your thing, you can't lose with either place. We recommend both. As others have pointed out, Civil War info is great in Vicksburg. Close to Interstate and Jackson, MS not that far away (state capitol). Natchez is not on Interstate, but Natchez Trace is cool and I believe you could hit it not too far from Vicksburg and swing south to Natchez. Natchez has boat casino, but the real attraction is a fairly large number of Civil War or antebellum homes. Don't miss Longwood antebellum home if you go. Interesting story of unfinished home in octagon shape with translucent marble floors on second & third story floors to allow light to pass through. To get back to I55 via Hwy. 84 which is mostly 4 lanes. RV parking across bridge in Vidalia, MS seems to have good reputation...have not stayed there yet. Enjoy the trip! (If you take the Trace, watch for wildlife. Plenty of it generally.)

We like Natchez, MS. Love the old Antebellum Mansion there.
