Hello. Welcome to Kino. We have spent the past three winters at the Western Horizons Resort in Kino. We will be there again around Feb. 1.

We cross the border at Nogales, AZ. It's about 172 miles to Hermosillo; then east about 60 mi. to the village of Kino; then another 12 to the WHR resort.

You will stop at Kilometer 21 (about 15 mi. south of the border) to get your tourist permit. This could take up to 2 hrs.

Mexico Hwy. 15 to Hermosillo is a four-lane divided highway. The lanes aren't quite as wide as we have in the states, but it's a good road. In most places there is no shoulder. It's kind of "white knuckle" for about the first 50 miles; then you get used to it. Thank goodness there isn't much traffic. The maximum speed limit it about 60 mph. This hwy. is a toll road and you will stop at three toll booth on the way to Hermosillo

The highway to Kino should be a breeze, as they just finished putting in a new road this past summer; and it is not toll.

The road from Kino to WHR is referred to as "the road from ****." And you will think it is! You just have to take it slow and it will take you about an hour for the first 10 miles. After turning left at the arch, it's a really nice sandy road into the park.

We feel it's worthwhile going there, but we stay there for six weeks; It's very laid back, out in the desert, beautiful sunrises/sunsets; the Sea of Cortez is very calm and gorgeous. At low tide, we go clamming, fish if you like, pick up shells on the beach, hiking, etc. There are some activities organized by volunteers. A Mexican comes in his pickup once a week to sell fresh vegetables. Monday nights a group gets together to go in to Old Kino for dinner at the local Mexican joint.

If you would like more information, please email us: sorensontx@yahoo.com
