Tracfone will not tell you that it uses the AT&T network but it will be AT&T if it is a smart phone.

A non smart Tracfone uses the Verizon network and again it also will not tell you that.

If you look at the Tracfone coverage maps for smart and non smart phones you'll see that are are identical to the AT&T and Verizion coverage maps.

We turned on Vz service for Canada before crossing. It didn't cost much. This was only for voice. We made sure we turned off data service on our phones before entering Canada. If you don't do this your phone will use data and you'll see it in your bill. We had no surprises. Cell service was pretty good, but some places, mainly in the Yukon don't have much service outside the few towns.

My cell phones did work in Alaska

Just got back from a 4 month trip to Alaska and back and my cell phones worked perfectly in Alaska, as long as there was coverage.

Many places, even along the Alaska Highway don't have cell phone coverage, due to the distance between towers and major cities.

We did hear that the charges for using cell phones in Canada were extremely high, so we didn't even try. We had an IPAD with us and used it when Wi-Fi was available to send messages and e-mails. Libraries, most visitor centers and many restaurants have Wi-Fi available.

Old Cell phones do work in Alaska!

Mike

Wow! Thanks for coming back to give your report. Wish more folks would do this.
