Williamsburg

Hi everyone! We are looking for a place to stay in the Williamsburg VA. Does anyone have a suggestion? We prefer some place a little more wooded. Also we have 3 children so kid friendly is a plus.
We are planing Bush Gardens and Historic Williamsburg. Any suggestions on area attractions are also welcomed.

There is a KOA north of Williamsburg. Also Anvil Trl Pk just outside city limits on route 60 basicaly across from Yankee Candle factory. and short distance up the road is the Pottery"s Campground. There is a Mariners Museum and Military Museaum in Newport News. NN also has a city owned campground. Distance about 18 miles from Wmsbg. jamestown Settlement is right outside Wmsbg. Yorktown battlefield is about 15 mile (maybe less by the Parkway (federal park). Area called the historical triangle. Apprx an additional 20 mile to Norfolk is the Navy Base/Natilcus w/ battleship tour/Gen Macarthers tomb/museum. NN ship yard is were they build the only aircraft carriers plus subs. Hampton (by NN) has a small aviation park and a museum of aviation. Contact local chamber commerce at each place for info. You will not be disappointed and can not cover everything in one trip

I would suggest American Heritage. Wooded with nice pool for the kids. We have stayed at KOA too but liked AH much better.

You didn't say ages of your kids but you will not run out of things to do. Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown, Jamestown can take all the time you want.

Most people recommend American Heritage RV Park, especially if you want shade.

I don't recommend Anvil unless you're a very sound sleeper. It butts right up to the railroad right of way, and there are lots of coal trains rumbling to Norfolk. The trains are even noisier on the way back when they're empty.

Also checkout the park that is the site of the iRV2 2011 Nat'l Rally (above). We stayed there last fall and found the area a great place. Not extremely near Wm'burg but that isn't a bad thing. It's a HUGE park with enough for the kids to do (you may not leave). Trees EVERYWHERE!
We (grown-ups) found Jamestown & Yorktown as interesting as Wm'burg where for 5 folks you're going to "drop some large change$$" for the all inclusive tickets.

Thanks campers! I will look at the sites all of you mentioned. I love all the suggestions. My kids are ages 13, 11 and 10. We are trying to find some cheep fun things to do and in the tourist areas that's hard to do.

We stayed there last year and enjoyed it. They had a huge water slide set up for the kids.

Stayed at American Heritage over the July 4th weekend. Very Nice.

Have to agree that Heritage is probably the best of the group. The two KOAs (side by side) are expensive and one is rather cramped as I recall. You also have Water County USA just up from Busch Gardens that is a nice water park. Newport News City Park is inexpensive but does not have sewer hookup.

I'm pretty new to this site so excuse my ignorance but what is the rally? Is it for Ft'ers only?

Welcome!
A rally is simply a coming together of RV folks (gathering) the big difference between a normal camping weekend with friends is that Rallies offer you a chance to meet new like minded folks (like IRV2 members) see some of the latest offerings from the RV world vendors, get your rig worked on for next to nothing or sometimes a meal and a drink around the camp fire. Like going to the state fair but no rides.

I sit corrected! Just make sure you wear your life jacket!

Oh and don't forget if you run into SeaJay or Wayne( both may be able to provide some air for the balloons) that you need to listen to the stories with an understanding that they are extremely old and may not be sure where they are at the time. just give the Sailor 10 cents and the Marine directions to the boat.
