My wife and I will be starting our fulltiming sometime in June.We plan on leaving Conn. and heading west through Niagra Falls , into Canada , over to Mich. U.P. , then into South and North Dakota , Wyoming , Montana , up into British Columbia, over to Washington ,and down into Oregon .My question is if we end up somewhere around the end of September looking for a place to spend the winter in Arizona will we have a difficult time doing so , or are there plenty of places to hang your hat? We will be traveling in a 36' class A. Thank you in advance for any insight or advice any of you seasoned fulltimers can give , Bruc.

I have good news for you Bruc! There are a gazillion places to winter in the low desert of Arizona and you will have no problems finding a spot with FHU or boondock. As of tomorrow there will be one more spot...... where I have nested this season in Apache Junction AZ.

The difficulty will be narrow down where to stay. Tons of places across the spectrum of price and features. If you give us some information about what you're looking for or any particular part of AZ I'll help where I can.

Don't limit yourself to one place in As. I a m 63' long and have no problem for a day or a month. Now with that said if there is an event you wish to be near think ahead a bit. Like spring baseball or a NASCAR race.

We've been RVing for less than two years and wintered last year and this year in Tucson, AZ. Although we did make a reservation for 2014 at the same park we stayed in 2013, we've decided to "wing it" next winter. We're thinking of staying a month at several different parks rather than the entire winter at one park. Like others have said, there are so many parks that it's unlikely you won't be able to find a space. In Tucson, the gem & mineral show usually occurs the first two weeks of February, so there are more RVs in Tucson during that time and fewer spaces available.

I agree there are many parks in many cities in Arizona.....just need to decide what you are looking for and what you want the weather to be like. We spent January through last week in Yuma, AZ and we went swimming, hubby played volleyball, & we also played Pickle Ball most days. Weather was anywhere from the mid 60's to a few days near 90 the last few days we were there. We have stayed in Tucson and around the Phoenix Area. Plenty of RV parks.....check out Passport America for info on RV Parks by location. Also hubby uses an iPhone app called AllStays. It was well worth the $10 he paid for it. He uses it any day we are on the road, get locations, direction, phone numbers, ratings on parks. Hope this helps! Welcome to the full time club!

Every 2-3 years we winter in the SW (NM and TX) thus far and have found we prefer the public campgrounds such as federal (COE, USFS, BLM), state, county and city parks. They're often much cheaper and if you're equipped for boondocking, there are thousand of free places where you can hang out.

We've found the best resource for locating these types of places is an iOS app called The Ultimate US Public Campground Project. There is also a web-based version.
