Winter Tent Camping!!!

Today's starts our annual Boy Scout winter campout, the Klondike Derby!

I get 40 boys and adults to disconnect from electronics for the weekend, sleep on the ground in a tent in 15 degree weather, and actually ENJOY themselves.

Tomorrow the Scouts will pull a Klondike sled around to 12 stations to test their Scout skills. They will also have a cooking contest, sled race, and a big evening campfire.

The hot chocolate will be flowing and card games will be going under the hiss of a Coleman lantern.

Have a great time - I have done that often tho every time I did recall my US Army days in the 1960's doing just that very thing in -20F/2+ feet of snow at Ft Devens, MA. It really wasn't fun then as our commanding officer thought every blizzard or cold snap was a time for camping out and communing with nature and playing war games

I have three Eagle Scouts and my boys spent summers hiking and working at Philmont.

sadiebug,

My three boys are Eagles too! Went to Philmont in 2007 with the middle son and will be going this August with the youngest. There is NOTHING like Philmont...

My oldest loved working there so much he went back to work after having his appendix taken out in Taos. Went down expecting him to be out in a few days and ended up spending 12 with him in the hospital on double antibiotics. His appendix was gangrene but encased in it's own pocket so he was lucky except for the 6 inch scar he has. They couldn't even sew him up right away. That was a sight! We no sooner got back to Iowa and they had to haul him into the hospital again because fluid had built up in the pocket where the appendix had been and was pushing on his lungs from lack of excersing his lungs. So that year he left his appendix, the next year his wallet and the last year a 1980 S10 Blazer.
