Originally our plan was to go to the Austin area this summer and scope it out for retirement. Then we go this crazy idea to by the RV. I'm hoping to make the trek to the Austin area this winter or fall still. If this works out, we think we will relocate to that area, buy a small home on a lot with a big RV garage.
My bike is a Trek 5200 road bike. Yep...peddle power. In looking at the weather in TX, I hope to get much my biking in through out the year. I know, maybe I am reversing the intent of the thread but I am considering not relocating (But living in Illinois is annoying me. LOL) and wintering in TX. So...I'm listening a lot.

Just a little suggestion but I love the New Braunfels area. If you have the chance to check it out you definitely should. It has a smaller town feel with big cities within a 20-40 minute drive. It is a very up and coming (growing) area with a lot to do with the wonderful river to go float down or abundance of little shops to check out. Gruene is also right there with many wineries and wonderful restaurants.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the Port Aransas/Rockport area as south TX option. We stayed in Port Aransas this past winter and are planning to return. Temperatures in Port A are significantly warmer than the Hill Country and nearly as warm as the RGV. There are plenty of campgrounds and all of them will be less costly than what you paid in FL. Having Corpus Christi 30 minutes away provides excellent shopping, restauranting and medical facilities when you want or need them.
We stayed at Pioneer Beach Resort and have made reservations to return. The campground has its own boardwalk over the dunes to the beach and has a full slate of activities, if you are the kind of person who wants them.

I prefer the Hill country but most winter Texans go to the Rio Grande Valley. Common rates are about 3-350 a month plus electric. Parks range from small intimate secluded to huge chain operations. Activities of every kind. I even saw advertisement for a nudist park, whatever floats your boat. Fishing is great.

In a nudest park? I hate to ask what they use for bait

We stayed our first year after retiring, in the rgv. We stayed at Victoria Palms, a very nice park. Wanting to explore other places we have wintered in AZ, and Fla. This year we plan to return to the rgv.

Was wondering ??? Why do you prefer the Hill Country over the Rio Grand Valley? Noticed on one of the reply posts that the winds do frequently blow, (got the impression, maybe strong at times), in the Rio Grand Valley. Are the temperatures much cooler in the Hill Country? Personally, I'm not one for a lot of heat. I like cooler temps, within reason. I've always said, "A 70 degree day is perfect with no wind". Was just wondering why ???

The temps in the hill country are definately cooler but usually only by a few degrees. The wind is a lot less, there are fewer storms west of I-35. I like to move around and see different country. You seldom need reservations in the hill country. A lot of Army Corps camps on nice lakes and the price is 10 a night with a senior pass.
Thuddriver: in Austin check out Mckinley State Park, it is about 7 miles from downtown and quite nice. The Oasis resturant, west of town, is a nice experience.
Sirpurrcival: depends on what you are trying to catch

Aransas/Rockport area...

Interesting... This location might need to be looked into. Seems many like the Corpus Christi area. One question. Some mention the winds are very strong at times in the RGV area. I assume, because being close to the gulf, this naturally happens. Are the winds high at times at the Aransas/Rockport area? When we stayed near Daytona Beach, (Post Orange, Fl), last month, seemed we had days of high winds, but other days were very calm... In fact, some very warm days and wished we had some wind, at times.

Not much for riding , can always go over to Padre Island. I prefer to move around, 4 winters in Texas 9 parks, a month in Florida 4 parks, 2 winters Arizona area maybe 10 parks. The riding is best in AZ, put the quiet pipes on and do everyone a favor.

Thats my way of THINKING and spending a winter SOUTH, and we lived for 5 years in El Paso / TX.

If you are going south for the winter, I would suspect that you are doing it for the weather! Rio Grand Valley, in south Texas is at the same Latitude as Ft Myers or Lauderdale in Florida, so it only makes sense that the weather there will be warmer during the winter than Austin, Tx or Orlando! And that is the case! However, the RGV gets some of it's weather systems from the Gulf and some blows in from Mexico. Mexicos weather will blow in across the mountains and at times mountinous weather can be chilly. The wind can and does blow there! Sometimes it seems that it has blown for days on end, and when it does my guess is it adverages close to 20+ MPH. The nice thing about that is when it is 85 or 90 deg. a little wind keeps it comfortable! Comfortable is why you would be there! The RGV has a feeling of being in Mexico. That is because almost all of the year round people speak spanish and are desendants from there. There is nearly a million folks that live in the valley. That will get you a Wal Mart about every mile or so and every national store that is available to you anywhere in the states. If you enjoy traveling Canada, go to the RGV, it seems to me that nearly all of them winter there!
