Wisconsin Dells, WI
My family just finished a dream vacation in the dells. We like staying in state and national parks because it's a bit cheaper, the spaces are larger and they seem to have more hiking and other outdoor activities to enjoy than private parks we have been to. I really appreciate the posts with specifics about areas we plan on traveling to so here is my first go at contributing.
All that said, we stayed at Mirror Lake State Park which was right outside the Dells area (5 minutes). The campsites had electricity, which is important to us, but no water at the sites. They did have very well maintained showers though. The park has hiking trails, boat rentals, a beach (not much of one but that's coming from someone who lives on the ocean), and much more.
The Dells area has two parts - the upper and the lower Dells. The upper dells is your night life tourist, t-shirt trinket shops with great food and street entertainment. The lower dells is an area where there are a bunch of entertainment venues such as water parks, roller coasters, go carts, amphibious vehicle rides, a water skiing show and much more.
If you go don't miss Monks cheese curds on a frisbee, Pizza Villa's thin crust pizza, the Swing Crew Band's saw playing, the chicken wire humor on the green and white ducks, Tommy Bartlet Show, and Poseidon's rage at Mount Olympus.
On our next trip to the dells, I would like to visit the Seth Peterson Cottage designed by Frank Lloyd Wright which was right outside the park. Unfortunately, it has limited visitation hours so we didn't make it.
