Don't know when the Rv parks around the outside of Yellowstone open.
Inside, this year, Mammoth open all year, Madison opened4/29, Fishing Bridge opened 5/6 and non of the others opened before 5/20.

I will be experiencing my fourth Montana winter this year and I can say that each have been different. I would suggest you make your plans, go for the campsite you want and then leave it it up to "ole mother nature". This year as an example we stayed at Fishing Bridge the 3rd week of May. We always shoot for mid week reservations and the weekend before we arrived a snow storm hit and closed all the roads in the park for a day. Good luck!

Yellowstone May 2017

Thank you for your input
I might arrive a week later to increase chance of freer travel
I can cope with temp road closures.
We are 45ft so Fishing Bridge is not an option.
Looking forward to a post winter visit but don't want to be stuck in a campground not being able to tour other than in a snow mobile.
Also we have guests staying with us and really want them to be very impressed with our most visited park
