Yellowstone weather in September?
Planning on leaving Illinois the 3rd week of August and heading to Yellowstone area until September 21st or so. I understand you never know but what are your thoughts on weather?

I'm following with interest because we are planning on being there after Labor Day for a week and the Tetons after that.

If you're going to Yellowstone, you might want to use this as an aid for weather.

We've been to both parks through the end of September and the weather was perfect. Cool nights. Warm days. You could get a dusting of snow but the ground is still to warm so it'll melt by mid-morning. It's a lovely time to be there.
Keep in mind that some things in the park close down in stages. Study both park web sites for dates. The sites are full of helpful information on things to do, roads, etc.

In Yellowstone anything can happen. It can snow on 4th of July. That being said, we were there for the entire month of September last year and had no snow. Left Oct 2. Snowed Oct3!

Also in Yellowstone and Grand Tetons last September. X2 on the beautiful weather. It is surprising how early they start shutting things down. Fishing Bridge has the only RV hookups in the park, and they are closed by the second week of Sept.

It should be quite nice, and probably some fall colors as well. Cool evenings. We've been in Grand Teton the last few years when they close shop at Jackson Lake Lodge, which is not until about Oct 9th.

In my opinion that's a good time to be there. Can get below freezing at night but pleasant day temps. I've been there twice in September and once in mid-late October. They were closing the park facilities down then for winter. Jackson hole has 1000s of elk in the refuge. Hope you enjoy it. I've only stayed at fishing bridge CG.

We're gonna try to make it in early Sept, but it's iffy. We've done it several times in the past with no problems. Fishing bridge is the place to stay. One year it snowed on us, but as was said, it didn't stick much to the ground. While it's always a crapshoot, I say go for it!

Found that out the hard way!! Spent 3 days in the West Yellowstone KOA waiting for the pass to open. When it did, what a gorgeous drive that was!
