Zoo Miami and nearby campgrounds
My wife and I had visited the Miami Metro Zoo, now known as Zoo Miami a number of years before Hurricane Andrew devastated it. And now that it's been totally rebuilt, we wanted to go see it again.
Last time we stayed in a nearby campground that was located in an old fruit grove and really liked it. Unfortunately we don't remember what it was called and had no idea if it still existed. We tried to get reservations at the Larry and Penny Thompson Part but they were full. So we ended up with a site at Miami Everglades RV Resort.
We came in at night and quickly determined that it had formerly been a KOA and that campsites were stacked pretty tightly together. Initially we weren't very pleased but after seeing it in the daylight and discovering that it was nicely landscaped and cared for, and quiet, we decided that we would come back.
We did take a side trip to the Thompson RV Park and discovered that it was the one we'd stayed at so many years ago and it still looks like a lovely place to stay with much more room around the sites with lots of open space.
Oh, and before I forget, the Zoo is fantastic. We had perfect weather for strolling the park and could only do so much the first day so came back for a second. And thanks to the wonderful lady in the ticket office, she pointed out that you can come back as many times as you want within ten days for an additional ten dollars. We were prepared to pay full price again but she saved us that expense.
