We attended the Balloon Fiesta this year as part of the Newmar Kountry Klub where we were positioned in the VIP West lots. It was boon-docking but fresh water resupply and sewer pump-out services are available (and reasonably priced). From our position the launch field itself was not visible but was only a short walk to the entrance. That said, once launched the skies are filled with them so viewing the balloons is a given from any spot. Being close by does have its benefits in terms of getting down onto the launch field early for the laser light shows, morning glows, and walking the field among the balloonists as they inflate and lift off all of which is pretty much complete by 8:30-9:00 am then its just a matter of looking up and around watching all them. The day then turns to opportunities to sight see the local Albuquerque attractions, lunch, etc. before sunset or nightfall. They also have some on the field at sunset and after including nightly fireworks.

All RV lots around the launch field will be packed and rally type parking is the norm (close proximity between RVs). The Presidents lot (which features hook-ups) sold out for the 2018 Fiesta in 16 minutes Oct. 24th. while it seems that the VIP-E and W lots get equally booked up by groups, i.e. Monaco, Airstream, Newmar, etc. etc. As to other outlying RV parks/campgrounds offering shuttle services I personally cannot comment (simply unaware if they do or don't). I will say the traffic into / out from the Balloon Museum and Launch-field is at most times bumper-to-bumper but the APD does an excellent job of keeping it moving and as well make special concessions for large RVs (i.e. allow them to make/take turns while diverting other regular passengers vehicles to alternate routes). They (APD) even closes off certain exit ramps on I-25 near the park as to preempt congestion and keep traffic moving.

Certainly a "bucket list" must do type event, the Balloon Fiesta is one that is worth the planning and attendance. We already plan to return in a few years when our now infant grandkids are of age to attend.

We are thinking of attending for the 1st half of the Fiesta, but are curious if we will miss the "Special Shape" balloons. Those are scheduled for special events starting in the 2nd half of the week. Do they also participate in events during the first half of the week?

Thanks!

Most everything is flying every day. This year we arrived Tuesday noontime. No reservations. No wait time at check in area at the huge dry camping section. Got a good spot only a few rows back from Alameda Drive. Loads of open spaces. Next morning balloons of all shapes right overhead. Same thing for Thursday, Friday & Saturday. No flying Sunday. Too much wind.

I live in Albuquerque and they do special shapes throughout the whole event. There is special events just for special shapes. There should be a schedule of events available, if not now, very soon. The special shapes do require less wind before they can inflate which limits opportunities sometimes.

I used to live in Albuquerque, and have seen many festivals. Now I'm in Colorado. This past year, some family members wanted to go, so I parked at the Costco, took the shuttle to the launch site. Most of the family had rented a casita, so it went well. Be prepared for cold, damp, hot, windy, cloudy, sunny weather. But they have very few hurricanes that time of year.

I went with a club within Escapees. We were parked right on one of the landing areas. It is dry camping with pumpout available. They can also hook you up to crew on a balloon if you want to. If you crew you get free tickets to all events. The cost for the ten days is somewhere around $450-500. If you need info email me @ mlgunn1@ yahoo.com

As many have said, this is an event not to miss..!!
As Airstreamers we went w the Airstream Club and were right up front in the VIP West Area. Not 5 min. to the field. We had no problem w boon docking, just ran the generator in the evening for a couple hours to recharge the batteries. Plan on starting the day w many layers of clothing and take them off as the day warms up. Enjoy all the balloons as you can get right up to them as they fill. Don't miss the museum either, it is wonderful.
It is also fun to watch the lines of traffic trying to get into the area at 5 in the morning at Dawn Patrol where they send up a few balloons to check the winds. Join a group or club that has yearly sites and you will be in a good location.

We have a spot with the Escapees for the 1st 5 days. Now I need to be in the area for one more night as my wife has to fly out on 19/10 and back on 10/11 before we head south to explore. Where would be the best places to look for a 10/10 stay?

You could stay at the Fiesta. Might have to change spots.
Most RV parks will have a spot, although the prices are higher during the fiesta.

Enchanted trails will probably have a spot, but is the wrong direction for the airport.

Isleta Casino has a RV park just south of the airport.
