We will be heading to Blacksburg for the start of VT football. We have a parking spot for the Vectra in the "cage" right on campus. Is there any other "Hokies" out there that park there? Not sure where our spot is until we get there...they seem to renumber them every year. VT doesn't have a very strong schedule this year, but we still love going to all the games.

Hokie fans everywhere!!! While I don't keep up much with college football, I am surrounded by Hokie fans here in Roanoke. I am sure it is fun and do hope they have a good season (so I won't hear my co-workers whine about their losses).

With all the rain we've had today and supposed to have tomorrow, hope you will be parked on a hard surface .

WOW, I'm real jealous!
My dad used to teach ROTC Military Science there in the late '60s and we went to the home games there. The stadium scoreboard used to have a big turkey on it whose eyes would light up and there was a speaker that made a "gobbling' sound from it when there was a touchdown. Oh yeah, they also shot off a cannon everytime they scored. The "Hokies" used to be named the "Gobblers" back then. Actually the "Hokies" used to be the name of VT's sports backers club. I think they changed the name of the team for some obvious reasons.
I was fifteen back then and other than my own highschool football experience, those were the only live stadium games that I've been too. I can't wait till we're fulltiming it. My wife and I plan to go to some Pro games.
By the by, I where a VT cap when I play golf.
Have a GREAT time!!!

If you have to ask what a Hokie is then you aren't one ! We are the best college football fans on the east coast. Lane Stadium is one of the best college stadiums ( and loudest) to watch a football game. Go Hokies !!!

What is a Hokie

From the above link.....(since you asked...)

What Is a Hokie?
A Look at Virginia Tech Traditions

Here is the answer to that oft-posed question, "What's a Hokie?" and an explanation of other Tech traditions.

What is a Hokie? The origin of the word "Hokie" has nothing to do with a turkey. It was coined by O. M. Stull (class of 1896), who used it in a spirit yell he wrote for a competition.

Here's how that competition came to be held. Virginia Tech was founded in 1872 as a land-grant institution and was named Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College. In 1896, the Virginia General Assembly officially changed the college's name to Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute, a name so long that citizens shortened it in popular usage to VPI. The original college cheer, which made reference to the original name of the institution, was no longer suitable. Thus, a contest was held to select a new spirit yell, and Stull won the $5 top prize for his cheer, now known as Old Hokie:

Hoki, Hoki, Hoki, Hy.
Techs, Techs, V.P.I.
Sola-Rex, Sola-Rah.
Polytechs - Vir-gin-ia.
Rae, Ri, V.P.I.

Later, the phrase "Team! Team! Team!" was added at the end, and an "e" was added to "Hoki."

Stull later said that he made up the word as an attention-grabber. Though he may not have known it, "Hokie" (in its various forms) has been around at least since 1842. According to Johann Norstedt, now a retired Virginia Tech English professor, "[Hokie was] a word that people used to express feeling, approval, excitement, surprise. Hokie, then, is a word like 'hooray,' or 'yeah,' or 'rah.'" Whatever its original meaning, the word in the popular cheer did, as Stull wanted, grab attention and has been a part of Virginia Tech tradition ever since.

Thankyou, I enjoyed that info. Now maybe somebody can tell me what a Terrapin (sp) of Maryland is and even a Hoya of Virginia.
