Attend or Not - FMCA Rally

Making our Spring '16 travel schedule and was curious was to what we might expect at a National Rally. This would be our first such event.

If you are relatively new to RVing I would recommend you attend and take advantage of the many seminars they offer. At the two FMCA national rallies my DW and I attended during our first year in our new to us coach each offered more than 100 seminars to attend and learn from. These free seminars covered topics from maintenance to cooking with a microwave convention oven to self publishing a book and much more.

Another advantage of attending is the opportunity to check out RV related products first hand and talk to those in the know on them and the RV lifestyle.

Our shake down trip was to an FMCA Rally where we not only learned a great deal from the seminars and vendors but we also took advantage of the install and maintenance services available to take care of the initial upgrades we wanted and to deal with many of the maintenance issues.

We felt our first FMCA Rally was so beneficial that we attended a second one about 9 months later.

Since you have a Newmar you may also be able to enjoy the opportunity to talk to the Newmar technical/service reps that attend many of the shows. I was able to have one of the service reps visit our coach and have a look at a couple of issues I was dealing with, including an elusive electrical problem. They looked at my intermittent electrical problem and gave me a diagnosis along with instructions on how to install the defective component since they didn't have a replacement circuit board with them. Their service charge was $0.00.

Ron just about covered everything you can expect. International conventions is where all be big vendors go. By big I mean, Carefree, Atwood, Dometic,Girard, battery dealers, tire dealers, furniture, just about everything that is installed on your coach will be represented by the manufacturer or a dealer.

Are you thinking about going to Perry?

We've been to several and find they are well worth the time and money to attend. As said earlier, lots of vendors and services available. We use a RoadMaster towbar and they usually have people going around servicing their towbars for no cost.

If you're a gadget guy, would like to learn more about your coach and see what's new, you should attend a rally or two. We've been to three in the last 5 years. We don't necessarily go out of our way to go to one, but if it's in the area, we'll stop in.

Here's something you should know. If the rally starts on a Thursday, there will often be people there as early as a one week before. If you show up the day it starts, you'll be parking way in the back.

What DSD doesn't always hold true but never fear, there are always trams available so the walking isn't that great.

At some of the rallies we've found that being close might not be a good thing even with the trams. If you wait for a tram coming from the outskirts they might all be full. I've even gotten on an outgoing one and ridden it all the way around and back past our stop just to be sure of getting on one. There is a limit to the seating and they won't let you stand.

Yes, we are thinking about going to Perry, GA in March. Given the size of the event, I'm curious to know if they allow golf carts on premises?

Can you get "day passes" to attend?

Camping out at the fairgrounds in Perry, GA has no real appeal, but would consider a day trip from our s&b to check it out......

You won't need a golfcart. There are plenty of trams. There are also FMCA golfcarts manned by volunteers running around everywhere. Just wave & you'll be riding!

The last time FMCA was in Perry the local towing companies made a lot of money pulling the rigs out of the mud - I think it rained the entire time of the rally!

Also try a Good Sam rally or two. We've found them to be more fun overall.
