Puerto Penasco

WIT club is having a rally there in Feb & March. Anyone been to PP & your thought about travel there. How are the roads from Ariz to PP? If anyone has done the WIT tour please comment with your thoughts. Thanks.

Don't know what the WIT is but can tell you about Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco)

Within the last few months there has been the assassination of the chief of police in Puerto Penasco, numerous other incidents of violence and the recent temporary take-over of the town of Sonoita across from the Lukeville port of entry by a 20 vehicle team of armed cartel members. That incident caused the mayor to flee to Hermosillo.

There is a travel advisory warning posted by the US State Separtment regarding travel to the area.

The roads are fine... probably better than those in southern California, but they are narrow with no shoulders and a consderable drop should you go off. We used to go to Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco) frequently but don't go anymore. If you do choose to go travel only during the daytime. It's only around an hour from the US border.

WIT (Winnebago Itasca Travelers). The trip has hosts that serve a guides from the border to PP but if there is a problem with armed bandits they will be of little use. We will be a group of 30 motorhomes all traveling together which might be a good target for robbery. I may rethink my participation in this rally.

I used to go every October, but not any more. Never had a problem, except for a parade that held us up for an hour+. Then... there is the wait getting back across the border. On a holiday weekend, it can be up to 8 hours. Not worth it.

Rumor has it that if the surveyors hadn't headed straight to Yuma when they ran out of whiskey, AZ would have beach front property.

Note: We, myself and DW, were in Tucson and asked the AAA office about traveling to PP.
The office staff said: No Way. The travel is dangerous due to the troubles in Mexico. We did not go. Would not recommend anyone to try traveling into Mexico at this time.
Maybe in the future RVer's can again enjoy Mexico and the beaches.

I notice PP is right next to the airport. Do you get much noise?

We stayed at the Monterey Fairgrounds in California which is right next to the Monterey Airport runway.
First flight leaves at 6:05 am. Every morning.

The police chief was not assassinated, just shot but nothing serious. If you go and pay attention to your surroundings, all will be fine. We have friends that live there full time and it is business as usual. Here is a recent article about the violence. Violence fuels fears about Rocky Point, but diehards don't fret

We will be down there mid Feb and will spend a month. We stay at the same park the WIT group does and there hasn't been any problems there for the past 5 years. The park also has the best paint and body guy in PP so bring your damaged coach down and get it repaired cheap.

Playa Bonita.

For those that are afraid to drive down by themselves, the RP tourism bureau will meet you at the border and escort you down and then back to the US border. Contact the bureau for info.

Border Patrol agent killed in Arizona - CNN.com

Mexico is safe. They brought the violence to AZ.

My condolences to the families of the agents.

This happened 5 mile inside the US - Mexican border.
