Theft at Quartzsite?

Nobody ever mentions the theft that goes on at Quartzsite!

I have had two different friends on different occasions that had their toyhauler, and motorhome completely cleaned out, (and NOT in a good way), while they went away for a few hours to explore the area. ATVs, notebook computers, televisions, plumbing fixtures, built-in ONAN generator, dashboard radio, gps units, camera systems, satellite equipment, food, alcohol, appliances, all taken in a matter of hours.

Due to the close knit community that tends to gather there on a regular basis, nobody "rats" on anyone when it does occur. It's like a little utopia of security! Calling the police is no help, if nobody will admit anything.

All you hear about is the quiet frugal snowbirds that can do no harm.

Beware to always leave someone at your site with a working cell phone.

That is just amazing that people get ripped off at a place like that and no one sees anything.

Maybe mounting a hidden security camera for a witness and have good insurance.

Howdy!

We've wintered in Quartzsite severall times but its been a few years. Always heard of thefts of portable genrrators but nothing like you posted. You neighbors know everything that goes on around you and others. The folks we've been around in the South Laposa area always looked out for each other. This to me sounds like the neighbors my be the problem as they know you patterns of coming and going and keep an eye on you activities. Would be interrested to know what area of Quartzsite this happen?

Yes do tell, was it at a resort or while boon docking or where?
This sure put's a different view on Quartzite.
I know it's always around but to have it happen to yourself is worrisome

Howdy!

This has been posted on other RV forms by the same OP. I'm wondering why the OP has not responded to mine an others question as to the location of the thefts mentioned in this post. Surely if it was this bad we would be hearing from others in Quartzsite.

Agreed, with accusations and stories like this, a few "facts" are in order.

Sounds to me like somebody just wants to scare people away. I wonder if it has gotten too crowded?

I had read the OP's post several weeks ago and we were thinking of going to Quartzsite, but after reading that we really didn't want to go and have to worry. About a week ago the Newmar group out a post telling people about the Quartzsite event, where to meet and that they usually get about 60 MH's out on the BLM land. I asked on that post about this same issue and several people who attend every year said they had never heard of any theft like the OP reported and that the people who live there are very nice and accomodating. They also said in the Newmar group they boondock on the BLM land and there's always someone there, and they have never had any problems. So that info changed our minds and we will attend if we can.

WOW...taking things like that "in a matter of hours" would have taken an army of people with an arsenal of equipment....and with little or no noise to draw attention? Makes one think sumthang ain't right in the hood. Heck, it takes me near that long just to change the oil in the generator properly. But to completely remove it? Really?

My friends were staying in the boondocking section. They visited in March of 2004 to see the wildflowers in bloom. They were puposely not setup next to anyone, as everyone was over 65, and they were in their 40'swith kids that were going to be making noise.

They didn't know anyone there, and made the big mistake of leaving their rigs completely unattended.

You are correct. There were many tire tracks, a whole bunch of footprints in the sand and in the rigs, and it would have taken skilled people to remove everything, with trucks to haul everything away.

The families drove to Palm Springs for the day. they were gone from about 10 a.m. until about 7 p.m. And if you're dealing with locals, they can see who is coming from many mile away.

The issue isn't at all that the event didn't draw ateention. The issue is that everyone that may have seen or heard something told law enforcement that they didn't see or hear anything.

The closest nearby rig was about 250 feet away, with three retired elderly people there all day long and they claimed not to have seen or heard anything.

Even the responding LEOs thought that everything about the people seemed fishy.
