301 between Ocala and Jacksonville

Going to start our first around the country in about 2 weeks. Our first stop is to visit an old friend living in St. Marys, Georgia, just north of Jacksonville. We'll be coming up I75 in Florida out of Tampa. Thinking about turning off onto 301 by Ocala up to Jacksonville to get to I-95 instead of I-75 to I-10. Is 301 ok to travel between Ocala and Jacksonville with a motorhome?..I know of the little town speed traps, but are there any low hanging wires, low bridges, etc to worry about?

No problem. Made the trip down a month ago. Lots of towns and some traffic so take your time and enjoy the ride.

301 is the best way to go. 40 miles shorter than 75 to 10 and good road all the way.

Go a little north of Ocala, go east on SR 326 to get to US 301 and avoid Ocala traffic. US 301 is a nice road but don't get caught speeding through those little towns. Avoid Jax, proceed up US 301 to Callahan, then go east on SR 200 to connect with I-95.

We take 40 east past Ocala and go thru the Ocala forest.Prettier than 301 and we are not in a rush. The road is two lanes but not crowded and no city traffic to deal with.

As others have said, 301 is a good road with many 4-lane, 65mph sections.

You said you are aware of the speed traps, so keep on your toes. There is one section of 301 that is something like 24 miles long where the speed limit changes over 20 times. Not only are the police watching, but it seems like the little towns go out of their way to trip you up.

My son lives off 301 south of Starke. He tells me the traffic enforcement officers (nice way of saying cops) will ticket their mother and any one else exceeding the speed limit. Triple A used to have (maybe still do) bill boards warning drivers of speed traps on 301.

couldn't agree more. To me, the only problem is getting through Starke and Baldwin, but no real difficulties. For years I have avoided 301 from Baldwin but went up it not long ago and could not believe how nice is is now.

We use a Commercial Carrier road atlas, along with a GPS. 301 is a truck route which means 8ft 6in wide, 13ft6in high, 80,000pounds, up to 80ft long. Hope this helps.

Below is the route i have used a few times. Not the fastest route but i like it for a change of pace off the highway. You can also take a right on 40 in ocala and go east to 19 through the natl forest. turn left on 19 and go north up through green cove springs and jaxsonville.

ignore the part near calhan ga that looks wrong. It is, map was messing with me and i was to lazy to fix it proper.
