Advise on taking 50 over Monarch pass in Colorado

It is not bad. Steady pitch both up and down. Done it several times in a 40’DP towing a jeep.

And the thai food place at the corner of 50/285 in Poncha Springs has some pretty good food.

the pass is 11,000 ft so with a gas rig you will lose a lot of power. The way down will tax your brakes. I’d recommend you drive the car over and down the pass, it’s a big load behind a gas rig. Unless your rig is in great shape, very good brakes, etc, I’d not recommend it. I’ve done it in a 40 ft diesel pusher towing, but turbo diesels don’t lose much power at this elevation, and I had an exhaust brake, would not have done it without that. Call the local highway patrol and see what they say. Good luck

I consider it very doable, it's a beautiful drive. There are a few sections of 7% grades, but pay attention to your temperature gauge and downshift when it starts to climb. Downgrades, use lower gears and use the brakes to slow by 10 mph or more, then foot off the pedal until the next need to slow by 10 mph. Folks burn out brakes by using them too much and overheating them. Stop and take photos!

Take your time and enjoy the Drive, not that much to talk about.

Best of Luck,

That's really the only way to get to Colorado Springs unless going way out of your way and still, you'll have passes to encounter.

Monarch is very doable. It's a popular RV route for all sizes and all types. You won't be alone out there and it'll be over before you know it! You'll go slow up but so will everyone else.

Hwy 50 is one of our favorite drives - very scenic.

Also there is a big parking lot at the top. Plenty of room to pull off and view

As long as you use your transmission & brakes correctly you’ll have no issues. We did it last spring towing our 17.5K fifth wheel. Just don’t get it a hurry & enjoy the scenery.

Thanks everyone...... Made the trip over Monarch Pass today. NO problem, easy drive. 30 mph up but glad there was no winds. That could be a problem on some of those tighter switchbacks.

Thanks again.
