I hope this is the most appropriate forum...if not would a moderator kindly move it?
We are considering a trip along the Alaska hwy with the 5th wheel next spring/early summer. I have heard of folks driving one way and taking a cruise/ferry back along the coast. Has anyone on here done that and have any recommendations? Since we wish to visit folks in northern Alta and in Vancouver seems like a good way to do it without backtracking.

New Milepost doesn't come out till March? I think.??? See if you can get an old one for price and reservation info or try an online search. We checked and too pricy for us. We drove down stopping at Hyder to see the bears at the salmon run.(mid July)You wouldn't be back tracking if you do the Alcan loop then cut down the Cassier to Canada 16. there is an Alaska forum here.-http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/listings/forum/65.cfm

Thanks for the tips. I will check out both . I suspect that the prices will be scary...it is a bit of a compromise as I am NOT a cruise person...however the boss has wanted to try one for the last 35 years...may have to bite the bullet for the sake of Harmony.
The lt route south sounds really good to me tho.....
Thanks
Ian

We took the Cassiar up and the Alaska Hwy back all the way to Edmonton, Alberta in 2000, glad we did...the Cassiar is much more remote but the side trips off of it (Hyder etc) are very interesting. I enjoy the adventure of the outdoors, having spent 25 years in big boating, cruising does not interest me at all....

We were also considering taking the ferry from Washington to Seward,AK but quickly dropped that idea after they sent us back the price on how much it would cost us to ride it along with our 5er the whole way to Alaska, not only that we found out that RVers are not aloud to stay in their RV to sleep or eat during the trip so you either need to rent a sleeping cabin from them or you can sleep on the deck, if you take pets you are aloud to keep them inside the RV and you are aloud to have access so you can feed and walk during the trip.

I'm finding both the price and the 'limitations' to be excessive so far. Next step (before choosing the land/land route) is to see if they still offer a program they had about 15 years ago or so...that one was a pass like Eurorail with stops all along the coast so that one could get off , sightsee/camp and then get on again to the next stop. No sign of that yet but still looking!
