Looking for some road advice. We are looking at going to St. George UT after the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque. I have checked a couple of map programs and they suggest I-40 to Flagstaff then US 89/ Alt 89 north until it meets up with AZ 389 then take 389 west to St. George. I have read that 89 will not be a problem but I am not sure about AZ 389. 389 cuts off of 89 just south of Fredonia which is just before the AZ UT border.
Thanks for any advice

Hi Dave & Jeri!
That route will be fine. We did the trip in reverse - St. George to the GC NP, and AZ 389 is no problem. On Alt US 89 you will have a climb up the Kaibab Plateau from Vermilion Cliffs to Jacob's Lake but it is nothing unusual. The scenerey between Marble Canyon, AZ and Hurricane, UT via Fredonia, AZ is really super.
Be aware that once you leave I-40 and head north on US 89 there are very limited facilities.
Enjoy the scenerey!

I concur with Frank. We did the reverse route but went thru Page to visit Lake Powell and the dam. 89 is probably a little easier to drive than 89A and it's a kick driving over the river but the scenery is probably a little better on 89A. Either way, take it is a great drive. We drove it slow to take in the sights. Coming into Hurricane can be a little confusing so watch the signs carefully. Frank is right, there is not much in the way of facilities once you leave Flagstaff. If you decide to go thru Page, Wahweap (Lake Powell Resort) is a great campground with a great view of the lake. Pull thru are available on the "D" loop and have the best views of Lake Powell.

Great information. We will go East from Hurricane this fall towards I-40 and was wondering about 389. Thanks. Another question---Going east after Page on 89 there is a route East on 264 from Tuba City that goes to I-40 to Gallup NM. Any advice????

SR-264 is a good road...we've taken it from Tuba City to it's junction with US-191 where we headed north to Chinle and Canyon de Chelly National Monument. It will take you right through the heart of the Hopi Reservation. We haven't driven the portion of SR-264 from that point on to I-40, but I have no reason to believe that it isn't also a good road.
