Alternate route on I 77 in Va
I usually travel north from Fl on I 26 to I 77 to I 81 into Pa. I am looking for an alternate route to get to I 81 from the Carolinas avoiding I 77 in the Fancy Gap area in Va if possible. Looking for motorhome friendly route.

You don't have many choices but there are a couple we have used in the past. It may be a bit slower traveling though. You could exit RT 77 in Charlotte and go N. on 85 and either take Rt 220 to Roanoke to Rt 81 ( still hilly) or take Rt.29 up to Front Royal to Rt 66 and then over to 81

Alternate route on I 77 in Va
No need to make that huge westward swing if you just want to avoid Fancy Gap. Coming from FL, stay north on I-95 to just north of Fredericksburg, and take US17 north toward Warrenton.
(BTW, take the I-295 bypass around Richmond. It only adds 4-5 minutes to the trip, it's far better road, and I've never seen it with other than light traffic.)
US17 will colocate with or become US29, I-66, and finally US50. No need to stay on I-66, just follow US50 right through to Winchester. It's good double barreled highway all the way from Fredericksburg to Winchester, and connects to I-81 fifteen miles farther north than I-66.
