Alternate route to I-75 southbound, south of Atlanta
I've been trapped three times during daylight hours in stop and go traffic in I-75 south of Atlanta (mi 232 to 216) and I would like to avoid this by using an alternate route (as the overhead sign suggests but doesn't give a route).
Can anyone suggest/recommend another way to avoid the traffic jams through the construction?
The slow down doesn't make sense since they have maintained three lanes but the flow just stops for no obvious reason.

Our solution to Atlanta was a bit drastic... Hwy 441 through Athens, from Tennessee. Of course that was in October. Very enjoyable road.

Hit Atalanta at about 2-3 AM and you should not have any problem. Actually... I do not know if Atlanta has web based traffic cams like Detroit does but if it does.. Connect every hour for a few days and see when traffic is at the lightest.. That's the time to go.
Many cities have those cameras
For Detroit you go to michigan.gov/mdot and click on the roads and traffic link

Hey ... thanks guys! Wayne - that's what we were planning ... sleep all day drive at night. Chuck ... that's what I was looking for ... didn't think of going that far off I-75 but that looks quicker than the back roads I was looking at.
Appreciate your help!

use HOV lanes thru ATLANTA then exit south of the airport on US19, which runs all the way to Tampa, if you wish, or you can get back on 75 most anywhere along the way...
always travel thru ATL between 10a and 2pm to minimize traffic, and HOV lanes ares available for the whole I75 route thru the metro area

So, you are saying two people and two dogs in a motor home are legal in the HOV lanes? Jim.

Most HOV lanes I've seen say 2 or more people. But I don't use them.

I live in the ATL area.
Yes, you can use the HOV lane with 2 or more people.
The mess south of ATL is a major mess and will be for some time - I have been caught up in in a couple of times myself. One of my co-workers goes that way every day and says if you get thru there by 2 PM, you will be fine. So, like someone said -- if driving during the day transit between 10 AM - 2 PM, or wait till after about 8PM till around 6 AM.

I enjoy traveling 441 from below milledgeville georgia all the way to lake city. Above Milledgeville is not that bad but more crowded than below.
