Amarillo to Raton hwy 87 - decent roads?

a buddy is taking his maiden voyage with his new 33 foot TT,

Overall trip from Conroe Texas to Denver.

Good sams has him leaving Amarillo to the north on 87, hooking over to keep 87 to 25 south of a raton.

I know that some of those roads out that way are in bad shape.

any info on this route?

THANKS!
