America’s Worst Road

I’ve driven almost 16,000 miles during the last 4 months wondering North America, I’d like to put my vote in for naming Interstate 10 Americas worst highway. Although we usually try to avoid the busy interstate highways, sometimes geograhy necitates traveling them. We found “10” to have extremely heavy car and truck traffic. We traveled from the Florida panhandle to past New Orleans on this miserable highway and saw more serious accidents here than all the other routes combined. At one point I saw a 8 foot 4X4 piece of lumber lying across the passing lane, vehicles were swerving wildly to avoid it. The heavy traffic means well worn pavement and crowded rest areas, a very stressful drive. It was a huge relief leaving this highway behind us.

Well crap dude. If you'd have stayed on it past Baton Rouge towards Houston it actually gets worse.
They did some work on it around Lafayette I think, so it doesn't have missing concrete at every break in the sections anymore though.

It also is bad east of San Antonio about 30 miles or so. I've been on dirt roads that had less bumps in them.

Damn nice all the way to Cali from there though.

Agreed. I busted a sway bar bracket going through the San Antonio area. Other interstates have their crappy areas, but 10 probably has the most total miles of crappy areas.

I could not agree more, 10 ranks as some of the worse driving we have encountered. We make a point of avoiding the area now. I'll drive further to miss taking the section.

10 is definitely pretty bad. I'd give honorable mention to I- 20 from Louisiana to Texas. Really bad around Shreveport. Feels like you're flying from one expansion joint and landing on the next one.

If you take I-481 around Syracuse, the rest of I-81, north, seems OK to me.

Just got in from a trip to New York City, the highways are awful. I've driven on smoother dirt roads after torrential rain storms.

I 95 from NY into CT isn't really any better.

Allow me to add some input from Canada.
We drove Hwy 16 from Grande Prairie, Alberta to Lloydminster last May with our new Class A that we had just picked up from the dealership.
By the time we reached Lloydminster we had 5 stone chips in the windshield!
The roads are all paved, but there are so many heavy trucks using this main artery that the potholes and gravel are everywhere.
After the 4,000 km trip home to Ontario we immediately replace the windshield.
We will never take that route again.

We drove the full length of I 10 in the fall, it is a magic carpet compared to rt 81 in New York and rt 84 from 81 to the Connecticut state line. Pot holes over 3 foot in diameter and over a foot deep everywhere, it was like driving in a mine field for over 100 miles.

Since Louisiana has been mentioned a few times I'll pass on a warning of the bypass connecting I-10 and I-49 on the south and west side of Shreveport. It is LA 3132.
Avoid it at all costs. It will bounce your tv, tt, fiver and motorhome so bad as to open cabinets, move furniture, break dishes, etc.
It's better to take I-49 to I-20 and vice versa. I -20 is a little rough through Shreveport but not as bad as LA 3132.
I-49 is ok in town but has some bumps south of town towards Natchitoches.

America’s Worst Road

There are many challenging roads in the US. What amazes me is folks that hate certain roads so much they will “never again” use them.
They all get fixed from time to time!
I-10 was just fine for us from West to East last Spring.
If the road I’m on is horrible to me, I find an alternate.
