Anchorage to Ohio HELP!!
Hi everyone!! We will be traveling from Anchorage to Ohio in the spring. We are newbies, so be patient, ok?? This will be our first BIG trip in our motor home, and to say I am nervous is an understatement!!! We don't have navigation in our vehicle, but plan to get one before the trip. How do we begin planning our route? I would like to get into the states as soon as possible, but when I search mapquest they take us through Canada most of the way! We are not youngsters, so we thought getting an atlas is a good idea, and just follow that??? I didn't know if going by GPS would be difficult? Please help!!

Chick, there will be plenty along to help you out, if not I will jump in with whatever I do. I used to live in Fairbanks, but now live in Ohio. Why would you want to come here, just kidding. In the meantime check out a site called RVParky.com.

Why not map your way to Spokane Wa which would lead you straight down and continue the directions from there.

I drove from Elmendorf to Wright Pat back in 96. I'd did it with an atlas and printed directions. Took me 7 days and I recall it being about 3500 miles. I did it in November, hardly any snow, but definetly cold. Definetly want to make the drive again when I'm not on a schedule.
I drove the Alcan down to Edmonton and stopped in the big mall. Then straight south to the border and down through Great Falls, Mt. And took state Highway across MT to Billings. In Billings I picked up I90 and followed that through SD and stopped at Mt Rushmore. Followed 90 over into WI and then to Chicago and I think I65 to I70.

West Edmonton Mall - Attractions
It has an amusement park inside of the mall, I think maybe a waterproof too. After being deprived of riding a roller coasters for 4 years living in Alaska, the Edmonton mall was my first oppurtunity to indulge. Galaxy land is the indoor amusement park area.

A paper road atlas will work very well! Take the Alaskan Hwy or the Cassier Hwy out of Alaska and just head south until you want to turn east. Going across Canada to Ontario will cost more in fuel. Instead, head into Washington, Idaho or Montana and keep south. Or in Montana take Hwy 2 in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and head south from there. Pick some places and do some siteseeing along the way.
You can't get lost!

I have it completely mapped out in Rand McNally trip planner, private message me and I will forward it to you.
Basically three routes South from Anch. Shortest is down to Sweetgrass Mt. them cross to Ohio.
I would do a little sightseeing on the way South unless you are in a hurry. If coming back take a different route see more sights.
Heading S.
Banff, Alberta
Glacier National park
Devils Tower
Custer State park (Mt. Rushmore)
Bad Lands
Many more it is just up to you, but the trip is part of the adventure.

If you are doing preliminary logistics quit using Mapquest. It's useless. Use Google Maps, or better yet, if you are computer savvy Google Earth.

HippieChick, you mentioned a navigation system in your original post, I use https://www.amazon.com/Garmin-760LMT.../dp/B00CZ6WFXM and love it. As with all GPS systems you need to be savy about where you are and might even want a set of maps along. If you have a co-pilot the Milepost is a great way to travel to or from Alaska. My main reason for the RV760LMT was the Voice Command functions. This past summer I found myself traveling solo on a few trips and the ability to do simple things without taking my hands off of the wheel was invaluable. By simple I mean even having the ability to change the volume or brightness of the screen by voice command. In truth this GPS has never lead me astray, but I am sure it will some day, so I keep my own situational awareness engaged along with the GPS. Anyway enough of that. Let me talk about RVParky. This is a web based tool that allows you to plug in your departure and destination. In your case Anchorage to somewhere in Ohio. The tool will plot a route between the two points. We know you can't drive straight through so you can check the map for likely overnight's add the city and then drag it to the right sequence. You will see the mileage form the starting point to the first overnight. If it is farther than you want to drive select another city and drag it into position till you find a leg length that suits you and then move on to the next. Once you have a route consisting of reasonable legs you can move to your stops and select a campground, Walmart, or what ever you want to stay at.
Be sure to save periodically so you don't loose your route. I use this to come up with series of options for travel and sometime save two of more routes for the same trip. Once you have it the way you want it the file can be exported from your computer to your RV760 and then used for your routing.
I plan all my trips in RVParky and have had no issues in the last two years I have done this.
Any of the previous suggestions will work for you, this is just another arrow in your quiver.
Any questions give drop me a line.

I suspect you meant to say you plan your trips in RV Trip Wizard.
RVParky is a smartphone app we use to find campgrounds and stopping spots.
Personally, I been using Microsoft Streets & Trips for years (now discontinued). And then have the app open on my driver laptop running in the background behind VMSPC.
However the RV Trip Wizard looks good, even though $40 per year looks invaluable for planning a long trip.

I live in Anchorage if you're interested I would be willing to meet with you to help out. Private message me if you're interested.
There are many different applications to create a route each has it's strong points most get the job done. I rarely drive more than 300 miles a day planning to find a camping stop near that mileage. There are many web sites to help pick camping sites, municipal, commercial some are free. Then there are the Walmarts, Cabela's and truck stops.
It is an adventure just planning a trip, I enjoy the challenge. None of this is rocket science just spending time playing, I mean planning. I sometimes travel with no plan at all detouring to explore a new locations.
