Anyone go over the Siskiyous I-5 recently?

We will be heading from WA to Disney CA in 2 weeks and will be going down I-5 over the Siskiyous. We’ve been watching the DOT cams and the weather seems to vary wildly from day to day and even through the day. Has anyone recently crossed this pass? I’m wondering how well they maintain I5 through that area, it seems pretty decent by the cams as even though there looks to be quite a bit of snow on the side of the Interstate the road looks bare and a few times I have caught MH and travel trailers on the web cams. I did purchase chains for the MH just in case but I’m wondering if DOT does pretty well at deicing that area or sanding? I’ve planned out the trip to try and hit that area around 2 or 3 in the afternoon in hopes to hit the higher temps of the day. Any feedback would be much appreciated!

Just watch the weather. If you can hit it a couple of days after a storm clears, you should be fine. The plow trucks are all over this section of road, they do a fine job. We're happy to finally see the snow and rain!!

Just a late winter storm. Kind of unusual for us. You will be fine. In two weeks it could be summer here!

I always hit the passes mid day. That gives them a chance to clear any new snow and let the pavement dry. Really shouldn't be much of a problem this time of year though.

Thanks all, I’ve been watching the weather and webcams daily and am hoping there are no more winter storms up there. Will just take our time and go slow if things get slippery! I’ll also keep an eye out for those potholes outside LA. Thanks!

We always stay the night at Seven Feathers resort casino and look to a normal not too early departure. This gets us to the pass's mid morning so the snow clearing is completed. Still need to watch the weather for your day. You will need to carry a set of chains, the LAW. If it is too stormy stay put.

There are actually two summits; Siskiyou summit on the OR side, and Anderson grade (summit) in CA. All multi-lane freeway, 6% grade, If I remember right. So not a bad road at all, the Beaver just pulls us right up the hill, and the Jake lets us down the other side gently. Ag inspection (produce) southbound right at the bottom of Anderson grade. You will use your brakes here.

And then Black Butte Summit, about 30 mi. S of Yreka. The most difficult drive is I5 south of Dunsmuir to Redding. All freeway, 2 lanes each way, but twisty, with a couple of 40 mph curves that will sneak up on you. Be careful.

Look at Tripcheck.com a day before you want to travel. The cameras tell the whole story.

You should be good. We came back home a week ago, road was clear. I am now looking at Siskiyou summit weather on my cell phone. Highs in the mid 30's to mid to upper 40's. Cold at night, 18 to 30. That's the 10 day forecast. Like others said, check it out for the day you will be traveling through there. Two weeks from now should be warmer, wouldn't it, lol.
Enjoy your trip. Redding usually awaits you with sunshine.
