ATL-DC using I-20 to I-95 via Florence SC rd surface

Any reports out there on road surface conditions traveling from ATL to DC via Florence, SC using I-20 then I-95.

Thanks for any updates

I live in central SC and recently traveled east on I-20 from Bishopville, SC, to Florence, SC, then I-95 North from Florence, SC up into NC, then back home same day. I-20 is in better shape overall than I-95, I think, but both were fine. Both have good stretches and moderately rough stretches but I believe average better than just a few years ago. Traffic on I-95 was a lot heavier than that of I-20, btw. I’m headed up I-95 to DC and beyond in about 3 weeks and can tell you more about it then!

Americanrascal, hope this gets to you before your trip. We found I-95 to be pretty good except for a few short stretches, all the way from Florence to DC. Traffic very thick through Richmond and of course, around DC, but the roads themselves were not bad, certainly much better than just a few years ago.

Thanks for following up. We finished the trip several weeks ago. Decided to run up on I-81 . Won't do that again. The usual truck traffic seemed worse but that didn't bother me as badly as the continuing deterioration of the road surface in VA on 81. We ended up at Ft Belvoir and Pohick Bay south of DC.

Almost came down 95 to 20 on the way home, but in the end came down 95 to 85, then 85 to Charlotte, then 77 down to 20 then to 285 and 85 into LaGrange. We really liked that route. Missed the tough section of 85 from Charlotte to ATL and found the 95,85,77, 20 route quite easy. The only bad area was about 15 miles on the west side of Columbia headed to ATL. Lots of construction, narrow lanes, rough road and slow traffic in the 15 mile stretch. I also used the east bypass around Richmond as I hit town near rush hour.

But overall the trip was good.

If and when I run that direction again I may do the 20 and 95 route. Many thanks.

I live in west-central Virginia and have family in Florida. I hate driving I95 in anything. The last several trips I've adopted a route that takes 29S (and others) from Virginia to just S of Florence SC. While some stretches are 2 lane and there are a few towns the time difference isn't significant and it's a much more relaxing drive. Just a thought.
