Avoiding Chicago, going West

To go around Chicago looks like I will need help in route. Toll Roads Maps sent from Illinois haven't help choose a clean/easy route.

In 2010 has anyone used this route Northbound; I-80, I-294, I-290, I-90?
What are toll cost for MH and toad, and would this the best route?

Hi buttster,
A bit of radical thinking here. From Indiana consider taking I80 to La Salle, IL. Get on I39 and go North to pick up I90 in Rockford, IL. I calculate the extra miles about 45. For the extra miles one gets to avoid the tolls and traffic of the Chicago metro area.

Not radical, it's a good plan. I've done that, and it works well

thats the route I always use. less traffic and no tolls. actually believe the extramileage is less than quoted but don't remember at the moment.

If you are coming from the upper East and are using either the 80/90 toll road or I-94 Gary's alternate route (I-80, I-39 to I-90) is about your only option. If you are coming from the South, Indianapolis for instance, you could use I-74 to I-39 to I-90. I-74 and I-39 are not toll roads. If you do decide to run I-294 you do not have to jump off on I-290 to get to I90. You can stay on I-294 and the will take you to I-90 but you will have one extra toll to pay. Usually the ramp for I-290 gets quite backed up as it narrows from 2 lanes to 1 to get on the ramp.

The tolls would depend on MH axles, 2 or 3, giving you a total of 4 or 5 axles on the ground, wether or not you use I-pass and what time of day it is. You can use this link to get the toll costs: Toll Rates

I live near the Chicago area and use the toll roads quite often. Picking the right time of day is key to getting thru without any traffic hassles.

Which route? If you are talking about I-80 to I-39 there is a toll on I-80 at the I-294/I-80 split. There is also a toll on I-90 before you get into Wisconsin.

Try to time going through NW Indiana/Chicago area on I-80 after the morning rush, say between 9:30-11:30. Be aware there is always a great deal of truck traffic and backups by trucks can be brutal. Be sure to allow yourself some leeway in time.
I second the I-80 to I-39 to I-90 route, more miles but much less traffic hassle.

We do appreciate everyones input.
As a result I have rerouted our trip to follow I-80 to I-39 to I-90 using Streets & Trips.
This done there is indication of construction on I-39 from exit 66 North to exit 97 Northbound. Has anyone been thru this and what is to be expected?
Again thanks for this route.
