One word of caution for those not use to traveling the I95 corridor, NEVER trust I95 between Fredericksburg and DC, Northbound in the am and southbound in the pm. May be great may be a parking lot. More often than not it is a parking lot. Northbound backups start as early as 5:00am Southbound can start as early as 2:00pm. Unless you are in possession of several gallons of patience avoid I95 like the plague, whenever possible.
We definitely want to avoid the DC Metro area and that is why we were looking at 81 to 66 to 17 ... but maybe we should stay on 95 @ Fredericksburg and go to 30 (and then 33) and across that way ??

Well, this route will definately work.

That route is a lot of 2 lane road across to 33. I don't want to tell you what to do but I wouldn't want to travel that distance on Rt.30. Take a look at I95S to Rt.3 East to Rt2/17 South to Rt17 East. After looking at this route, I'm going to go 3E to 2S to 17E.

I appreciate the replies, this is the first trip that way for us and the horror stories deserved some checking out. I am glad I have posted it here, got some peace of mind and alot of good information. Thanks again

Thank you for the question about I81

We are considering going to Monticello next week and I am a "newibie," with a 24' Jayco travel trailer. From Gettysburg, I81 seems the best choice. I have done it several times to Florida in a car and rememberd all the trucks, but was not aware of "steep grades." So the plan is to leave Monday. Any suggestions on a campground in the area, or other places folks have seen. We will have a dog with us... Thank you!

We prefer 81. We travel from Ct down south and will get on 81 off 84 and stay on until North Carolina.

The few hills there are not an issue. A long hill doesnt abuse a motorhome.

We have done that trip with a C7 that slowed down to 45 and an ISX 15 liter that holds 65 in cruise control.

I travel 81 quite a bit and aside from heavy tractor trailer traffic, I don’t see any issues. There aren’t many steep, long grades or twisty roads like there is on 64 in west va
