Az highway 82

Has anyone taken Arizona highway 82 from mesa to Holbrook? Bought a new motorhome in Mesa and driving back here to Kansas. My garmin says that's the shortest way, but I don't know if it's the best way. I see it's four lanes. Wondering about the hills, if it's better to go to flagstaff then east on 40. If I can miss flagstaff all toghether that would be good.

We travelled AZ 87 from Mesa to Payson ... then AZ 260 to Heber ... then AZ 277 to Snowflake ... then AZ 77 to Holbrook

The road was fine. Regardless of how you go you will do some climbing because the change in elevation from the Phoenix area to I-40 area.

When you leave Mesa the vegetation will be cactii ... the vegetation changes to pine trees by the time you get to Payson.

Have done 87 from Phoenix to Winslow - loved the drive but it took some time. Two lane and some very slow winding climbs. The road to Holbrook will be 2 lane and relatively slow compared to the interstate. We just came back from a trip and used I-17 from Phoenix then I-40 (you do not go through Flagstaff, the interchange is south of the city) because the drive was easier and faster.

Mesa to Holbrook on 87 worked for me. Going up through Flagstaff would add anther 70 or so miles and not save any time if you choose that route.
