Bakersfield to Barstow - Boondocking Ops?
Traveling to Utah in April, we are thinking we'd like to stop somewhere between Bakersfield and Barstow - Probably before Mojave.
As long as I've lived in California, I've never driven the road before. We don't like overnighting in RV parks - we prefers rest stops, wal mart etc.
Does anyone want to express an opinion on the boondocking opportunities along that road?
Thanks,
Jerald Pendleton

Your best bet would probably be at the Love's Travel Center on the east end of Tehachapi. It is located right off the Hwy 58 highway. There is also a Home Depot in Tehachapi, but more difficult to get to. Or you can go on to 4-corners (Kramer jct) and stay at the Pilot.
And FWIW, you don't go through Mojave anymore on Hwy 58.
Hope this helps

Kern River County Park outside of Bakersfield. It is a dry camp park, really nice, easy to get to. The price is only $10, it is not a box store but a lot better since you are right on the river. Just stayed there two weeks ago while passing through. There is water and a dump station at the park.

Kip, is that over by Lake Ming? if it is, it's quite a ways from Hwy 58.

It is by Lake Ming, looked it up since I don't know the area. It was only about 10 minutes to 58 and if I remember correct it was almost a straight stretch through farm country. It was a beautiful place to call it a day and easier to unwind and relax after a day on the road then blacktop camping at the travel center up the hill. I don't mind blacktopping but if I can find someplace close by that is more peaceful then why not.

California City is a short detour off 58 but it is the ideal boondocking spot. We have been there many times. Find Borax Bill Park on a map, you can get an electric spot if you need it, take on water and as far as you can see you can camp free. There is actually a city road system laid out that was never paved and it is all open camping.
