Best route between Houston and Mission TX

There only appears to be two main choices. RT 77 and I believe the other is 281. For you experienced RGV wintertexans, which is the smoothest and safest route? Also, are there service stations/rest areas along that route. This will be our 1st winter there. Thanks

This is the route we use (see pdf)

The roads are as safe as any in the US, services are available all along the route. You will pass through numerous towns. Enjoy the trip and welcome to the Valley.

Where are you staying in Mission? We have a house in Leisure Valley.

Houston can be a zoo at times, Sunday or non rush hours are your best bet.

Where are you staying? We will be at Llano Grande for 2 months, then Bentsen Palm for 2 weeks.

We went northbound from RGV along the coast in the winter last year. I think we were on 77 for most of it.

Thanks rgvtexan & Stripe34! We will be staying at Canyon Lake in Mission for 4 months starting Nov. 1st.. We will be stopping in Houston to visit family before arriving in Mission, and yes, the traffic can be brutal there.

If you don't stop at Prasek's BBQ just South of El Campo, TX off 59 you will be doing yourself a huge disservice.
