Best route from Maine to Tampa, FL
Looking for info on best route to avoid I-84 on our way back to Tampa. 84 is just awful with pot holes, patch work, and huge ruts. Thinking about a short stretch of 84 87 to 287 to 80 to 81. Any better Ideas will be greatly appreciated. Not oppose to doing US Highways.

Luckydawg-
We've been experimenting with Mass Pike west to NY, then 87 south.
From there we go 287 to 202 to 31, then 295 at Ewing, NJ, all the way to the Delaware Memorial Bridge. At that point, join 95 and the crowd.

I-95 north of Richmond stinks. It will get you caught up in horrible traffic around NY, Philly, Baltimore and DC. Parts of it are rough, too.
I-84 to I-81 is a much nicer ride. Staying on I-84 to I-81 works because after you cross the Hudson, I -84 is all good roadway.
After Richmond, 95 is good. You can work your way over to Richmond from I-81 using I-64, or continue on I-81 (lovely drive) to I-77, then I-26 south to I-95.

I agree once you get past the Hudson I 84 is a nice ride. Going across the Mass Pike will add about 70 miles to your trip.

There are sections around New York that are car only. We drove from Baltimore to Maine last year and thought we were going to go from the New Jersey Turnpike to the Garden State Turnpike, across the Tappan Zee bridge, etc. We found that we couldn't go on the Garden State turnpike since it is cars only and ended up going across the George Washington Bridge into upper Manhattan. In addition to the $84 toll (cash only) our gps kept routing us to roads where I couldn't take the RV. I learned two things from this experience. The first is to avoid the area around NYC if at all possible and that $300 investment for a GPS that is designed for RVs and trucks that will avoid these issues is worth every penny.

That's not entirely correct. Vehicles over 10k are not allowed north of exit 105. South of 105 they are. GSP

Come out of Maine 95-495-90-84 to 91 South in Ct to 691 back to Waterbury,Ct and 84...stay in 84 to Newburgh,NY go South on 87 to 287 at Sufferin,NY..pickup 287 for 45 mile to 78 West to 81 West...then you have a couple of choices to either 95 or 75...but stay off 77 to Charolotte..a lot of construction....C

The Garden State Parkway allows RV its full length. There are a few overpasses where you want to be in the second of 5 lanes but they are well marked.
Palisades Parkway is cars only.

That's good to know. The signage is very confusing. I believe the sign says no truck in excess of 10,000 pounds. We were in excess of 10,000 pounds and were towing a car on a tow dolly which in some places says it is allowed and in others it is not.
