I'd rather make the climb over CA-152 than deal with the bay area freeways. CA-88 has fairly high elevation, I think it goes near 9000 ft, but the grades and roadway aren't bad and it is pretty scenic. I've seen double-trailer semis on it hauling hay. CA-4 or CA-108 over the Sierras are substantially more challenging. US-50 would be another option to cross, but it gets a lot more traffic.

X2 on this route. Carson Pass, on Hwy 88 is the highest point you will encounter
and you get a nice view coming down into Hope Valley. When I lived in Gilroy, this was the route we'd always take to get to Markleeville, or Minden area.
