Best route Monahans, TX to Carlsbad, NM

Hello, I am looking for the best route from Monahans, TX to Carlsbad, NM. I had planned on taking I-20 to Pecos and then to Hwy 285 to Carlsbad. However, a friend told me that 285 was a bad road with a lot of potholes and oil rig traffic. They recommended I-20 to I-10 to Hwy 54, and then to Hwy 62/180 over Guadalupe Pass to Carlsbad. I have a 32' Class C with a toad. I'm concerned about the grades through the pass. Does anyone have a recommendation to the best way to travel this route? Thank you for your help.

Taking I-10 to Van Horn and then north on 54 through Guadalupe Mtn. Nat'l Park and then east on 62/180 is a very easy route with a RV. The 'Pass' must be gradual because we don't even recall any big 'ups' or 'downs'. You don't drove on Guadalupe Mtn. The highway is next to it. We stay at Brantley Lake State Park to visit the caverns. Have a good trip!

Another route would be through Kermit and Jal, NM. Then you can take 128 to Carlsbad. Haven't driven that route in years and never in an RV. Used to live and work all over that area. Could be that all the roads are beat up from the recent boom. 285 may be your best reasonable option.
